just out of interest, all these mobos burning up the Solent, what sort of fuel consumption do you get from say, a twin diesel 34' semidisplacement capable of 20-25 knots cruising? And how much would you be paying fuel- wise for a 2 week cruise across the channel and along the French coast. I suspect the answer is: if you have to ask you can't afford it!!

My boat is a semi allthough I only do 10 knots top, I use somewhere between 5-10 liters an hour 1

I only fill up tank once to twice a year (1200 liters) and tend to travel to get fuel cheap ! Last fill up in Osstende at 18 p a liter at 500 liters about £90.
offcourse here it would cost around 225 !

probly a bit better than a gallon a mile i spose, but probly worse than 2miles a gallon. 300mile 2week cruise ooh er um praps 1500litres so a £1000 ish in smaller boat, £2000 in a bigger one.

Best is to just get the fuel and get swmbo to pay for it - that way you don't have a clue how much it costs AND it inhibits her shopping too much cos she's already had the credit card adrenlain hit. Be honest, if swmbo stayed at home knowing you're out sailing then jeez how much wd THAT cost, hm? Much, much more.

My boat is also a semi. I tend to cruise on 1 engine at around 8 - 9 at hull speed. alternating engines every 10 miles or so.
I use 1.5 - 2 gallons an hour.

If I use both engines and cruise at 14 -15 knots I think I'm burning 8 - 10 Gallons ph.

I use about 1.2 gallons per hour at 7 knots in a single engine semi displacement hull. I keep my boat in the USA so it only costs me about £1 a gallon.

Just sold my 45ft Squadron, twin 480hp volvo,s
over 5 years, worked out at .77 miles per gallon !! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif from memory,, about 30 gph at 25 knots so a trip to Gurnsey and back last year aprox £ 200,, that was at 25ish per litre, its near 45p now mind!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

That and the red fuel duty issue, is another reason, for haveing gone back to sail,, ireland to Torbay,, £11.30 worth of the red stuff ! /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif!, would have been near £500 in the Squadron, but only about 12 hours, rather than the 46 + via sail!!!
