Can anyone point me in the right direction for a good (and preferably inexpensive!) spray painter that can come to my workshop in Lymington to paint the bottom of my Salcombe Yawl? I I have a large compressor on site if that helps open up the options. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

G'day MBY,

Check out your local smash repair shop or even boat yard they have spray painters who are only too happy to wander in and spray then leave.

However, keep in mind that Automotive paint spraying is very different from spraying marine paints, Polyurethane is nothing like auto paint, an auto sprayer will tell you he can not see the line of his last pass; this may lead to runs or light patches.

We often need to re paint after doing repairs or modifications for clients and use a local automotive shop; the owner and one of his workers have both had a lot of experience painting boats and sailing them.

Trailer sailers get towed in and larger boats are sprayed in situ, with a full tent and filters (Mobile spray booth) if need be.

Getting a skilled spray painter in to do just the application is a good way to save as the preparation is 98% labour and only 2% materials. Moat spray painters love this arrangement as they only spend a couple of hours at most so cost is low and the finish is professional and they avoid all the hard and dusty work.

FWIW, we apply a coat of water to check fairing first, then a thin primer our self to check the preparation for tiny imperfections, this means you get a first class job at a minimum cost with no remedial work.

I hope this helps.

Avagoodweekend......

Assuming as in bottom you mean antifoul??

This needs an airless spray gun rather than an air compressor as the paint is thicker than finishing coats.

Hi Thanks for the advice. Regarding the type of paint, it will not be antifoul but Nautix hard teflon bottom paint, so normal spraying would be an option. Any local contacts would be helpful...
