Mobile Internet and Vodafone USB dongle and Mifi 2352

THere have been many reviews and I daresay the other networks are catching up, but the speeds available through 3 were consistently much higher than other networks, they have expanded their coverage very fast, and can piggy back onto other services such as Orange where 3 coverage is poor. They are also the only company providing (currently) a true unlimited data plan (the One Plan) which is available on iPhone for instance, with tethering allowed.

Ok, I can't dispute that they might be investing and have improved their network ( I don't have one of their phones and have not talked to anyone there for a while), but piggy backing (a.k.a domestic roaming or national roaming) only tells you about how good their roaming partner's network is.

I'm glad you're a happy customer.

I think you an tell I'm a happy customer as I have a vodafone phone with data sim which I'm letting lapse as I get zero connection here, and it was never that fast anywhere else, and I've used many other data networks as well. Now my phone is 3, my dongle is three, and just moving to 3 Mifi instead of dongle, and I use them all over the UK with very few issues, even where the 3 coverage map show no or limited native 3 connection - in those situations I'm happy to have a slower speed connection rather than none at all.

At present we have both a Vodofone USB dongle and a Vodafone Mifi 2352 on the boat. We used to have an annual contract with Vodafone but I cancelled this in October as we knew we would be away from the boat until April. I have learned from the recent thread on mobile internet in Greece that all three service providers offer more or less similar coverage, we will be in the Agean this year. My question is I would prefer to go down the PAYG route this year as we will move about a good deal and it appears the others Cosmote and Wind offer better deals for PAYG. If this is the case will their SIMS work in the Vodafone dongle/Mifi 2352 and if not where can I get them unlocked.

Could anyone clarify that you require or do not require an address in Greece to buy a PAYG sim card?

We certainly were asked in Vodaphone for proof of an address which was satisfied by a Marina contract. But this year we will not have any valid valid contracts. Will we therefore have a problem?

Not sure whether anyone has answered the unlocking bit yet. but you could try here.

Had no problem last Spring getting a PAYG data SIM from WIND. No address or tax number asked for. Just proof of identity...so take your passport along.

Dave

Dave, thanks for that. Perhaps Vodaphone has other rules or local "variations" due to lack of knowledge. I will be getting a PAYG Q sim which seems to give the best value - 100MB per month is more than adequate for my requirements.

Got a PAYG sim from Vodafone Greece, corfu this year, just passport needed.

Update on Mifi.

Managed to pick up an unlocked Mifi (rechargeable) a week ago in UK. Plenty on Amazon or The Bay.

Took just 5 minutes or so to enter in APN settings into the Mifi via laptop and up and running on my Georgian 3G sim card.

You can also watch step by step set procedures for most of the unlocked mifi devices on youtube.

I use an orange dongle with 3G sim, works off shore so far upto 3-4 miles, and has not had a problem yet with connection locally. We did have vodafone and O2 but there were pretty useless and didn't cover the entire coast of UK. Orange is on a monthly contract of a £10 and so far no problems with downloads or uploads, keeping web up to date etc

I have a 3G dongle and plug it into a normal router, which I run off my invertor.

Works great in the western med and Balearics.
