I will be bareboating in the Southern Ionian for the first time this year (previously we've been on several flotillas) and want to make sure that I can access weather data on a reliable and regular basis. I know that there are regular reports on the VHF but in the past I've found the heavily accented English a little difficult to decipher over the radio.

I was hoping to be able to access via a mobile dongle into my net-book. Has anyone any experience or recommendations for mobile broadband providers in the Southern Ionian.

Thanks in advance :-)!

Wind does a data sim with two options €15 for 7gb over a week or 1gb over a month.

Voda and cosmote also do data sims but I'm not sure of the costs or whether they do PAYG or contract only.

Wind data rates are usually reliable 3g even quite far offshore but there are patches of HDSPA and some Edge about.

If you do use Wind you will have to make sure that your dongle software talks to the system properly. Without it my Huawei software could see the modem but couldn't see that there was a Wind network available. I downloaded some other stuff and got in business. Take your laptop into the wind store in Preveza or Levkas to get up and running, they are particularly helpful. ( and the lass in Preveza is a stunner! :) )

If you have a PAYG sim card from Cosmote, you can have 60 MB per month for 3 euros from ;Whats up: If you need more you pay another 3 euros.
Most of the Mobile phone stuff goes over my head as I am stuck in a time warp. I have it on my phone and it works, WAP or something!

vodafone problems

Just bought a vodafone data sim contract - only took 2.5 hours in shop! Didn't work - another 4 hours in shop and they decided it would not work with my unlocked huwai dongle. Would not cancel contact for min of 2 months and only option was to buy a new dongle (E49). Finally working and get 3Gb a month for E20. Not at all impressed though.

My Greek friend tells me that Cosmote has the best 3G coverage. Otherwise Wind seems like a good deal. I have a Greek Vodafone dongle that has been OK in Aegean. I had to unload the software from my UK Vodafone dongle before it would work.

I have WInd 1GB per month €17. I have observed that when I have a full signal with GPRS, I have little to no chance of doing anything on the internet. I han have 1 bar signal with HDSPA and the service is faster that my BT broadband in the uk - (make memo to complain when I get back!)

What is the difference between the various signal types - is GPRS the old stuff??

Installation note: I have an unlocked Vodaphone Hauwai dongle, self installed, and just ran wind perfectly on installation. It runs Hauwais own Mobile connect software and I have no Wind software at all - and it is not needed.

Renewing Monthly Sub.
You can only get next months sub enabled by going to a wind store to buy the next €17 1GB. You cannot renew on the internet. So anytime during the month, go into the wind store with your original card set with the phone number on it, and you can activate it at any time up the the last day of your current service, by sending an SMS to 19595 with the message 1GB. Could not be easier. You may need to argue with them that the data tarif exists so keep you previous invoice - they will then believe you!

GSM - up to about 10 kbps
then came GPRS - 114 kbps
a minor increment in edge or eGprs to between 120 and 200 kbps
3G delivers 384 kbps
then comes HSDPA (4G) at 1.3 mbps. Evolutions of HSDPA are delivering up to 7.5 mbps.

Chris_robb if you use the text message function on the huawei to send the text then there's no need to go into the shop. You can use a voucher from one of the roadside kiosks to do this.
