My boat is only 23', and the only MOB recovery gear I have is the boarding ladder at the transom. It does go a couple of feet underwater to aid getting onto it, but I wonder how easy it would be in large waves, when the back of the boat is lurching up and down. I think that in practice, I would try to use ropes, sails, etc., but it would depend so much on conditions.

Then attach the 2 ends further inboard so there is no gap ... no reason why they have to be attached to the toe rail - could just as easily be the mast and grab rail on the coach roof - depends on your boat layout of course!
