We tried the MOB recovery by use of boom, topping-lift and inverted mainsheet to use as block and tackle.

It failed, my wife did not have the weight to allow the mainsheet to lift me out of the water.

In a real situation we realised MOB would have been banged against the side of the boat even if the winch, which would be slow, was used.

We have decided to press the DSC as soon as possible after MOB then proceed to make MOB fast to boat in some way.

If we can make a recovery we would inform Coastguard and get them to cancel Lifeboat/helicopter/nearby help.

How about making the mainsheet fast once attached to MOB and then, using topping lift and main halyard attached to boom, winch the boom up like a derrick? Boat will be stationery so boom could be pushed out to 90 degrees to keep MOB away from the topsides. Tough in a pitching/rolling sea I agree but many MOB occur in calm water and MOB simply can't climb back on board.
