S'cuse my ignorance but I assume an MMSI number is issued to a vessel and it remains so until
the demise of or the name is changed?

We're in the process of updating/upgrading our boat and it is registered in our names but the new radio/AIS will need the MMSI inputting so thought I'd best ask ?

But is the Radio Station not defined by the radio operators licence where the MMSI is derived from, ie the previous owner?

MMSI stays the same - when we changed the name of our yacht we simply had to tell the Radio Communications authority so they could update the paperwork. When we subsequently replaced the radio, the original MMSI was simply put in the new radio.

No.

The Radio Station is "defined" by the Ship Station license, which is free and instant from the Ofcom website. If you don't have one already, you should get it. Make sure to put the existing MMSI in the appropriate box, otherwise it will assign you a new one. In theory any previous owner's Ship Station license should be cancelled, though in practice it doesn't much matter whether they do. The MMSI on your Ship Station license is what should be in all the radios on board.

One of the terms of the Ship Station license is that the person operating the radio hold a Certificate of Competence (not technically a license). That's the bit of paper you did the course for, but it's unrelated to MMSIs or station identities.

Thanks for taking the time to reply all.

It transpires that the MMSI and call sign on the boats data plaque no longer existed so having spoken with Jamie at Spectrum (extremely helpful and patient) walked me through the process to update my licence so I now have an assigned MMSI and Call Sign.

Thanks all
