I have just bought a DSC radio (well, a few bits of a DSC radio). However I do not have an MMSI number despite having a license for a year. How do I get one without filling in the great big form from the RLA? Do I need to re-apply for a license?
Thanks

Yes, I did the license test thinghy, but am just not sure whether I need to reapply or if I can "update" my current license.
Oh well, I am now off to fill the form in cos' it look like I need to anyway.

Didya do the old normal vhf licence test thingy, or the more recent dsc one. It you did the old one, you'll hafta take a new update test.

I did the old VHF test a couple of years ago.
So do I get my number with the SRC certificate or the Fixed License disc whatsit?
Suppose I will have to go and take the DSC test then! DOH!

You do have to do the test to operate it, but you get your MMSI with the new tax disc thingy. You may also need to get the MMSI put in/changed by a local dealer on some sets.

You can't use your old licence even though it may be current. You have to apply for a new license, enclose another 20 quid with your nice new DSC pass document those nice people at the RCA will send you another peice of paper to stick on your boat.

When we upgraded only recently we requested a MMSI number (details of how to obtain were included somewhere in the current licence paperwork). Just filled it out, sent it back and they kindly sent us a new licence and MMSI number and DID NOT ask for any further licence fees even though our original licence does not run out till next April.

It was all plain sailing.

JUst to clarify

1) If you did old VHF test, you need to do new test. 2)
2) You don't need to take a course if you think you can pass by a bit of bookwork, though the upgrade course is only half a day
3) You can get your MMSI number at any time you like, either when you apply for a disc thingy, or at any time you like. You don't need to pay for it, it's part of your licence.(once you've done upgrade test)
