Hello Boaters,

As a function of the refit, we are renewing all nav/comm equipment. I sent in the serial numbers to the proper authority and to my surprise, I've been allocated a new MMSI.

I contacted the competent folks and I found out the newly fitted DSC HF requires a MMSI ending with 2 zeros...

Now I have to recode the rest of my gear. :blue:

Is this a Spanish thing, then?

The MMSI is meant to identify your boat, not your radios, so unless you reflag the boat the number should remain the same. Certainly for UK-registered boats Ofcom get this right, when you apply for a new license there is a space to provide the boat's existing MMSI and they will associate that with your license so any existing kit doesn't need to be changed.

Hello Pete,

I thought as you do. The new boat is French registered .. I called the equiv of OFCOM and they explained that with the installation of a DSC HF, the MMSI number must end with 2 zeros. So I went from an easy number to an easier number ending with.... 700.

I was told this is in compliance with the INMARSAT format.

If your vessel was UK flagged and you have changed to Spanish flag then this change may have nothing to do
with the HF but due to the fact that some flag states identify ship groups by the format of the MMSI ie three trailing
zeros is a commercial vessel and two trailing zeros is a leisure vessel. OZ for instance does this.

Your change of MMSI may be due to change of flag....Hope you intended this change as if remaining UK flag then should
use your UK MMSI in the HF.

Hi Bilgediver,

Boat is new to me and undergoing refit... Unfortunately, I cannot change my signature, so I still show my previous boat, a Bavaria 46 Exclusive.

Oh well...
