I would like to call someone`s MMSI no.I tried to call Byron 3`0 clock this morning but his radio was of the hook I think he`s the only one who`s got one, (probably dreaming about these young blonde scandy birds again) but worried i`ll have international resue swarming all over me still can`t fathom out the procedure. O.K. with the red emergency button. Is there some sort of directory with everyones name & number in it?

<font color=blue>Your MMSI number should be on the paperwork you received from the Radio Agency dudes when you re-newed your annual licence. There is a website somewhere with everyone's on it probably a page on the Radiocommunications Agency website.

<font color=blue>Ooops! that last question indicates to me you haven't upgraded your VHF Operators licence and done the testypoo for the DSC one.
The number is relayed automatically if you press the red button as is your position if you have connected the set to your GPS.

The nearest you'll get to a directory is the MARS database of the ITU. As Happy1/Grumpy1 found out it is not perfectly up to date in all respects - but pretty close in my case.

The reality is that you need to know the other party's MMSI before you go afloat. Most radios have a woefully inadequate directory mechanism, which is tedious to use, and pathetically short of capacity.

Assuming I have my chums MMSI number I can raise them in a minute or two (find instruction book, engage pilot, put reading glasses on, check destination channel, hit Tx and so on).

OTOH, I can change channel, listen hit Tx and hail them in ohh about 5 seconds. And I havent had to change specs.

Ah, progress is a really wonderful thing.

I even tried calling our local coast radio station - the poor duty officer, nearly fell of his perch when I tried he MMSI route (only took me 5 minutes to find his MMSI in Reads). Asked me not to be a smarta**e, and do it the usual way next time!

I have done the RYA DSC test and passed with flying colours. Byron you are avoiding the question. If I put your no. in my receiver and press the button will I get you the other end?Shall we try? We could always blame the yachtties, after all they blame us for everything.

<font color=blue>The answer is YES assuming I am within range. BUT! I have two sets aboard, if driving from below I don't have DSC and the upper set is off... vice versa.
Until forced to I shall be sticking to good old 16.
