MMSI "inheritance"

For the benefit of anyone else who may come across this thread later with the same issue.
This is what we did.
Procedure for licensing a radio already registered and assigned a callsign and an MMSI to a boat.
This is for when you buy a boat with the kit on board and wish to continue to use it ON THAT BOAT

Logged in to ofcom here (if you dont have an account you will need to open one, simple)
https://www.ofcom.org.uk/manage-your-licence/radiocommunication-licences/online-licensing-service

From there apply for a ships radio licence. Fill in what you are asked to.
You will get to a point where it asks if there is a callsign for the boat.
Enter that and hit the "check" button, it then finds the boat,MMSI etc
The rest is simple.
You will be asked about previous owner, with this, I discovered the last three owners had not updated the licence, but fortunately I had the details of the owners name on the licence.

If you do not know where to find any details call sign, MMSI etc go here
https://www.itu.int/mmsapp/ShipStation/list

It was a painless and simple process, much to my surprise, so no excuses, get it done. It might make things a LOT easier the one time you REALLY need that radio. :encouragement:

By the way, it is all free of charge.

There is an option to add a portable too, but if you use it on more than one boat like we do, then keep it on it's own portable licence seperately

thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread

Just been through the huge files of history of the boat, and found the surname of the owner of the boat at that time, Thomas... So that's the one, happy days, and thanks for the help guys. Now to go online and get it done

That's all good. Rob ably worth checking the MMSI number that is programmed into the radio, just to make sure it it the right one. Mr Thomas may have installed a second hand radio with someone else's number programmed in.

If you do find the MMSI is wrong, check with local chandlers and electronics dealers. You mentioned you had a SH GX1500. When I bought my current boat I had an almost new GX1500 in the old boat and an old Simrad RD68 in the new. I had a long delivery trip to make, from Cornwall to Kent, so wanted a reliable radio that I knew how to use, so decided to swap them. I found a chandler on the East Coast, Seamark Nunn that had the leads and software to reset the GX1500. There must be others with the same kit.
