MMSI for Portable VHF in international waters

May have been possible in the past, but wasn't when i added mine. I just tried to add one to my Ship Radio License and it's not an available option.

Might be worth everyone checking their license online, there have been some changes.

Ah, maybe they've changed it then. I can't log in 'cos it won't recognise my email (I'll have to give them a ring)

You can always just stick a non-DSC hand held on there anyway, it's not like anyone is going to check!

You need to re-register, using the email address you registered with originally. I got caught out with this yesterday.

Indeed. It wouldn't let me add a DSC HH when a bought mine a few weeks ago and the website has changed again since then. There are one or two different fields that i had to fill in as i went through the license. Nothing dramatic.

OK, that;s what I get for having a direct link to the login page! Ta

Aha. You can't add a DSC HH as such to the Portable Licence either! But on the portable licence you can enter the MMSI number for a HH VHF

Or to put it another way, neither licence now distinguishes between non-DSC and DSC hand helds. They used to, I've got my existing portable licence in front of me and it lists 1 VHF Portable Radio and 1 VHF/DSC Portable Radio, but now they don't

So there's no actual change, you can still list a DSC portable on the Ship's Radio Licence and use the MMSI allocated to the vessel

(Oddly, I had both my DSC and non-DSC hand helds on the portable licence because I use them away from the boat. They're both still on there, both listed with the same MMSI number even though only one is DSC, but you can now only have one hand held and one PLB on the licence)

I wouldn't worry about a licence in the USA for example the Americans can fit an SSB and use it with no ship or personal licence. We had been told this but it became obvious when the Americans were using a calling frequency. If you have a licence then you know if you receive a call you look for a frequency that isn't being used and call back. The American version is they receive a call and the answer to the caller is 'you pick a frequency', 'no you pick a frequency' and so on until one of them gives in. Also we were never asked for a VHF or SSB licence or ships licence wherever we went in over 10,000 nms.
