Waiting next week for my Garmin AIS600 transceiver with my MMSI programmed by Garmin Greece. (was a s/h unit and had another boat MMSI registered...)

Now, searching on some d/b MMSI 239725700 doesn't come up, on others it does come up.
I've "bought" my licence and MMSI from General Secretariat of Shipping, Merchant Ships' Inspection General Directorate here in Greece.
I'm now paying an annual fee to Hellenic Radio Services SA in Athens, a private company I assume.

Question is, how do I update the info presented?
Is there a standalone procedure? Do data need to be imported to a broad D/B from the guys "selling" me the service?
Do I need to somehow register online in order to manage the data broadcasted? How do they know I'm the owner before allowing me to edit data on a ship registry like that?

Confused!

cheers

I don't know why you are paying an annual fee but as you are in Greece I guess its a special tax.
In the Uk we can record the mmsi , boat details and emergency contact details with the coastguard , at no cost.
Also can go on http://www.marinetraffic.com/ website and edit data an add photogrphs at no cost (unless you want to pay for an enhanced service). I think it will be necessary for your transducer to have received a transmission from your the ais sytstem before the marinetraffic website can find your boat and allow you access to edit data and add pictures.
You should be able to edit the data on your AIS module (but not the mmsi). I certainly can do on my Raymarine.

If you're referring to the official ITU MARS database (http://www.itu.int/online/mms/mars/ship_search.sh) the answer is that you can't update or amend the details. The information in that database is submitted to it by the national licensing authorities. It can take weeks or even months for changes to a licence to be reflected in the MARS database (for UK licenses from OFCOM, if reputation is anything to go by it could take years in Greece!)

Other databases are held by people like Shipfinder, Marine Traffic etc. which can be amended by users via their websites as already mentioned

I am in the same boat

I have to pay a yearly fee for my station licence.

My MMSI number is also not on the ITU database as the South African has not submitted my licence details after 7 years. Just idle bureaucrats in my case tale you money but give nothing for it.

tbh, I'm not entirely sure I have to pay a fee and what that will be for. I issued the vhf licence in 2011 when I got the boat on my name.
Didn't do anything for the next 4 yrs that was on the hard, last year had to get an evaluation (done every 4yrs here iirc) so had to pay something like 20euro.
Maybe I have to do it again in 4 yrs on next check, but I'm reluctant to call the co and ask as they may grab the opportunity and charge me again

My concern with marinetraffic is that I couldn't see MiToS there but you solved that for me, will probably be OK next week when I receive the AIS transceiver and run it.
My other worry is that I may have to go around these two or three sites and add info for my boat there. Rather have something centrally managed but I understand the issue, hence my initial Qs

MiToS appears on ITU, so guess took them less than a year :p but the info are just the absolute basics but it looks that ITU don't list more stuff on Class B (aren't we?)
so no size, or other info there.

which brings the other Q I had in mind to ask and forgot...

How do you set/broadcast/whatever the route you're going to follow?
Don't find it exceptionally useful when I'm off for a w/e swimming 10nm from home port, but could be interesting and more useful when you plan some longer trips.
I see it on most Class A big ships either merchant, container, passenger et al, but rarely on yachts and mobos of the 10-20m length.

You cannot set any information on a Class B transceiver. It only transmits the basics. Class A transceivers on ships etc can, if the OOW bothers to programme the info in, transmit data such as destination, ETA cargo, etc. but class B can't

You don't need to add / change data on Marine Traffic etc., they are not used by officials and any info is only of interest to people who follow boats and ships

You may get confused because Marine Traffic etc. will often show destination, ETA etc. for small vessels but this info is being provided by a mobile device app such as Boatfinder not from the vessels AIS transceiver (if they've even got one, many people use an app to send faux-"AIS" data to the web based tracking sites). Nor can any data sent via an app be seen on an actual AIS transceiver (Class A or B)

Bru you destroyed everything...

:p

yes, that's what I thought and assumed that somehow the transceiver was accepting and broadcasting various info like ETA, previous port, etc.
Thanks a lot for all these clarifications. Once I receive the box, I'll just fit it and forget

not half as bad as waking up a while ago and learning that you lot are out of the EU...
I had faith on the bookies but not even that is true anymore, ts ts ts...

Vas, I may well turn south rather than east when I take Rafiki out and come and join you!

more than welcome Paui,

weather is just right (after the first heatwaye of the summer with temps reaching 41 last couple of days) we do have some clouds and "normal" or rather bearable temps today.

Interesting to see if the move to the Med will remain strong or if this brexit will affect it (negatively I suppose!)

cheers
