You guys are absolutely right. Spoken to Nichola at Ofcom this am. The MMSI stays with the boat. I don't know if I got this 100% - shes a fast talker, but if the current MMSI is not put in the second place on the application form the system generates a new number. This is what appears to have happened with mine. There is no reason for the change and Ofcom will re-issue the licence with the old number today.
My Furuno FM 2721 would have had to be reprogrammed with the new number by a Furuno engineer. Because the transceiver (black box) is installed behind fitted furniture it would have been necessary to call out the engineer and I was expecting a £60 bill.
I owe you guys a beer.
