Mizzen ensigns

She's 25 years old, has wooden spars, is gaff rigged and powered by tan and cream sails. Hopefully I can squeeze a question in before being booted out for being GRP.

The ensign currently flies from an aluminium pole which I have to hoist up the mizzen, whereupon the former wraps itself around the spare vhf antenna and light. Ideally, I'd like it wear it about a foot or so behind the mizzen on an arm, from where it will be free to flap around and not tangle itself with anything once run up the halyard.

Does this sound feasible, and if so, does anyone know of an 'off the shelf' arm I can get?

Since it's not a Gaff Mizzen I think the only solution is to remove the antenna. With the wind from astern the ensign is still going to catch the antenna.

A chemical classic A bit of stainless 10 mm tube with an arm that is slightly longer than the ensign bent at 45 deg and attached to the top of the mizzen should clear everything.

Could you just hoist it up a ( particularly ) slackened mizzen topping lift ?

Must say I think mizzen ensigns are a fine sight.

How about a permanent staff for the ensign, with the antenna on top of it?

I know I shouldn't but I am butting in. My burgee from the Hillyard association is huge. It runs to the spreaders. I have never yet managed to run it up to the top (the line is a continuous loop) without it rolling itself into a tightly rolled teatowel. there must be a seamanlike way, but I cant figure it. Sorry for butting in but its a bit related. As to the original post I would put it on a jackstaff on the stern
