Missing flap valve in impeller

Any suggestions about how to find and fit a replacement?

THe noble vessel has a bog standard Airmar speed transducer (as supplied by Raymarine with its ST60 kit) fitted in a through hull. When supplied there was a flap valve in the through hull, such that when the impeller was pulled for cleaning, said valve leapt into action like a goal keeper saving a penalty, and prevented overmuch water entering. Checked it when getting the boat ready for relaunch and the valve ain't there, all that's left is a strip of springy copper, which I guess had the job of flipping the flap up when the impeller was withdrawn.

What to do, apart from hacking the whole assembly apart and fitting a new through hull? Or just leaving the blanking plug in place and using GPS for speed this season?

or just be quicker at putting your hand over the hole when you pull the impellor?

Airmar do a repair kit for said flap

Hudson marine at Mercury normally have them and for about a £10 will let you have the whole through hull part (I think they replace loads of impellors so have lots of the through hull skin fittings left over!)

Simply remove the flap by removing the stainless spring clip and insert the new one. Very simple, only takes a few minutes so it can be done between tides

In the early days, no such thing was fitted and no boats sank as a result of withdrawing transducers. admittedly instead of the teacup of water, you used to have to mop about a teapot of water.

Good development of hand-eye coordination.

I've got used to the fountain, and know it ain't gonna sink me, but spending less time crouched over an open locker with a sponge, a teapot and baby shrimps would be welcome!

Put with aplomb and succinct humour, I know what you mean.

What used to always fill me with doom and despondency, was not so much the fountain, but the view of the sea-bed - I've never had much of a head for heights.

Now just a cupful, before half a bucket. It was easier to start with the dinghy bailer and then use the sponge.

How you get it into a teapot amazes me!!!
