I placed my "midship" cleats just fwd of cockpit,where I can reach them from within cockpit. I leave a multipurpose line attd to cleat & coiled hanging from lifeline/guardwire.
Looks messy,but it's handy,especially when docking singlehand.I also drop one fender over this cleat. When I dock,I jump off with this midship line & tie it. Then I have time to leisurely put out bow & stern lines. Cleat is also used for spring lines,after bow & stern are tied. I also have a small cleat about a meter fwd of the above cleat ,just fwd of widest
point,but close enough that the fenders hold hull clear of dock when squished tight.
No problems so far with pivoting with eng. in fwd or rev.
But all boats/folks are different...
