TWO young sailors from the Royal Windermere Yacht Club have made history by becoming the first all-female world champions in the Mirror class.

Anna Mackenzie and Holly Scott sailed to the ultimate title in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

(don't try looking at the Windermere Yacht Club site, it has apparently been suspended)

Good on em!

Shame it wont make any great waves in the national news, afterall its only sailing!!!!!!

A great acievement, congratulations to them.

I reckon the olympics should be sailed in a popular class, such as the Mirror, rather than some of the esoteric classes they use [Lasers excepted].

News Editors are cynical sods. To them it's just a couple of lasses in a little boat who've done quite well. Now where's that story about Bolton football club?

Sickening isn't it. We have loads of "Secret Champions" in Britain.

Because they are a success.
The media only likes to report British failures.
Also, as far as the media is concerned, this is not a proper sports story.
Sport is football, nothing else qualifies.
Yachting is for posh people.

Nay lad, thou hast made my day, I am a posh prat cos I spent me pennies wisely on the water!

Social mobility is a great thing, cos it's only in the old UK such prejudices seem so entrenched!

Tell them that our pitch is waterlogged and they may even listen but tell them that we dont use balls either odd shaped or spherical we dont kick the crap out of each other and we dont hunt innocent creatures and the media dont wish to know.
what about the positive examples that our bretherin give to the youth of britain and the world ?.
they would rather show sports men effecting crimminal assault on their opponents on the sports field.
little said about mike gouldings retiring from a verry meaningfull race to offer assistance and rescue a fellow competitor when the rest or should i say most of the "sporting" world would kick him in the b*ll*cks and continue to the finnishing line.

Possibly pedantic but Mike Goulding (sic) didn't retire to help his fellow competitor, the retirement came after the mast fell down and he was almost in port in South Africa. He would have been given a time allowance for the rescue had he continued.

You wouldn't want to capsize in those waters! I was in PE last February sailing on my uncle's boat which he keeps there, and a sharks fin was spotted...
He is a member of the Algoa Bay Yacht Club, it didn't seem to be very big to host a World Championships.
