Have had problems in greasing packing glands using the remote grease nipple points. These are 2 tubes that come from each end of the stern tube to a point in front of the engine. Question: does the stern tube (12" to 14" in length) require both greasing points, as I would like to fit one screw-down type remote greaser? I have now got the grease flowing between the two greasing points successfully. The shaft is supported by a plumber block inboard two inches away from stern tube packing nut. The wet end of the stern tube also terminates with a similar nut. Is there a cutlass bearing in here or packing? Any info will be much appreciated.

SinBad,

Your question uses many technical terms that I'm not familiar with (sorry about my english) but If I understand what you need to know, the stern tube uses packing and the grease is there to limit the water dripping from the shaft in the bilges (every time I come back from sailing I put some grease when I leave the boat). You have to renew the packing and adjust the water dripping level with the nut of the stern tube and the counter nut to secure it in position (don't over scrue it since you'll feel the shaft burning - adjust it so as to be able to turn the shaft by hand without sea entering). In my boat there is only one point that the grease tube can be attached to the stern gland (well the hose from the grease gun) and that is located on the nut of the stern tube). If I can be more of your assistance Email me at: sailoratcompulinkdotgr.
