Mirabella V Arrested

What...where...why.....?????? Oh God...what now? Whatever they say happened didn't, the boat wasn't even there. I swear! I have no comment to make, and whatever I was supposed to have said was misquoted and/or trumped up. Why are you guys always picking on me? I have never even been to Norway!

Is that enough for a classic overreaction....or should I keep going? You know I can!! Ah, the good old days....

Sorry if I have been a bit quiet, but I was hoping for another PoW sometime to catch up, but it seems everyone is too busy messing about on the water.

Hi Joe

Yes everyone busy with boats at the moment, think Matt's in France and Karen and I off for 3 weeks sailing Wednesday. Jimi still trying to get to Ireland but had to call into Falmouth with severe alcoholic poisoning. Saw Richard last weekend- he was lead surgeon at University College Hospital when all the bomb victims came in so he came down his boat to unwind. Haven't seen Ken or John for a while but they're active hereabouts.

We should try to arrange a PoW meet later in year. How's MV doing, haven't heard much of her of late? Did your dad's birthday bash go well?

Cheers
Tom

Ps you should visit Norway sometime in the summer. Stunning!

Tom:

Good to hear everyone is well after last week, although I had picked up that fact from other postings (JFM lucky to be in Wales!). Well done to Richard, I am sure he did a fantastic job as did all those in emergency services. I took my usual bus today, and I was pleased to see everyone else was so calm.

We are sort of happy that MV hasn't been in the news of late (I think we had enough last year), just getting on with her business. Anyone in Santorini right now should be able to see her in action. Charter guests happy, boat working well.

We had a great time in St Barths for dad's birthday, just wished we could have raced the other boats (not allowed to race). Anyone interested in big sail boats should try to get to St Barths in early April, there were over 20 boats there over 130'. I know you guys don't consider it real sailing (and you're probably right), but it was quite a sight. Especially since the handicapping worked very well and most were finishing within a few minutes of each other, right outside the main harbour. The rules say that owners must steer the boats, and so there were quite a few very worried captains around (if the boss prangs it they still get the blame anyway).

Let me know about PoW, and have a great summer.

Joe

Agree well done Richard and all the emergency services- where would we be without them? Also, it's good to see that people are carrying on with their lives. Must be difficult for some.

St Barths sounds great, did you get any pictures? Bet Jonno relieved not allowed to race. There are a couple of webcams on Santorini but not pointing at MV.

Have a great summer too and will be in contact for a PoW meet later.

Cheers
Tom

Re: Actually...you\'re wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hee hee, she looks great there but can't make out the ensign or ashtrays.

My toothpick shot of Amaya next to her in Gunwharf is a favourite with my nephew.

The thought of disputing overlaps at a buoy and shouting "water" to M5 sends shivers down the spine!

We were in Santorini on 19th June.

There was a very large yacht moored off the old port at Thiara that evening. We thought she looked like MV but weren't sure and couldn't get close enough to check. Was it her ?

Whether it was MV or not she looked fab !

Yup we will probably not succeed in fixing a PoW meet till end of August now. Should have tried harder to do it sooner, sorry. Lots of people are away most weekends. I'm going to the boat every weekend till Aug 31, heck there would be a recession if it weren't for this forum!

Joe I thought I saw MV in Port of Monaco, weekend before last? I was passing by at some distance so maybe I was mistaken...... or did she nip up from Greece for the Showboat awards, then nip back?

Here are Athena and Hyperion in Antibes last week. I always thought of Hyperion as a very big boat, but this shows the size step-up that trading up to Athena involved - must be x6 hull volume. Also there seems to be a biggest-ensign compo going on between Athena and MV? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi John:

Sorry but MV wasn't in Monaco for the awards (maybe if they had given us the right one one we have sent her...just kidding...no sour grapes whatsoever!!). She literally has no time off this summer, and it would have killed the crew to make that trip at that time. She will be in S of France towards the end of the summer.

Nice picture of Hyperion. I agree, it used to seem like she was huge. Athena's build quality is simply stunning, and you are right I think she is currently winning the largest ensign award, we must look into that!

I know you have seen this picture before, but I thought I would share it with others, looking down onto Hyperion from MV mast head. Using the chap's foot as a guide, Hyperion must be about 3 "feet" long!

I hope to see you in September at PoW. Have a great summer.

Joe

I can confirm she was in Santorini on June 19th, so perhaps that was indeed her you saw. Glad to hear she was presentable. Thank you for not going up too close, since sometimes it can get a little busy with spectators going around and around. No problem with taking a look, but some Mobo's do it at speed....oops that's another thread altogther.

I tried to find that pic of Hyperion and M5 in Monaco, nearly side by side, but seem to have lost it. It's an impressive picture becuase like the one you posted it shows how far the science has advanced. In 1998 Hyperion was world's biggest sloop/tallest mast, yet her mast reaches only to the 3rd spreaders on M5!

I'll try and find it. Meantime here's Hyperion again, last week. (Taken off La Garoupe on the E side of Cap D'Antibes, camera looking ENEwards, Villefranche is above her aft-most portlight, the end of Cap Ferrat is above the top step of her boarding ladder)
