Looks pretty hardcore, given just how much waves look more flattened out on camera than they really are.

Maybe not my idea of fun but then chances of ending up on a Achilles 24 above 70N must be slim :)

That man is incredible. But he's not foolhardy, he knows what he's doing. I have enormous respect for him.

Yes pretty sure you are right there. I used to have one fitted on my boat. Roger has modded his slightly so he can adjust the setting from the hatchway, hence the lines running back to it.

I have seen that claim made before. But what does it have to do with an Achilles 24 like Mingming II?

The Achilles 24 is still fairly shallow draft. Jumping from another thread, while reading the book "A Race for Madmen" it was clear that one boat survived massive storm waves round the Cape by keeping sail on to give forward motion and steerage to then slide down the face of waves. Leeway is better than tripping over and capsizing. It wouldn't and didn't work for all boats.
