I hope to be having a new engine fitted to a 34' sailing boat, in or near Milford Haven. Can anyone comment on suitable marine engineers etc. in the Haven? Information about Windjammer Marine would be particularly welcome.

If you have any qualms about posting comments in the forum perhaps send a PM?

Many thanks.

Can't recommend, but there must be marine engineers in Milford Docks.

Thanks for your comments.

Windjammer Marine is based at Milford Docks. I have spoken with someone at that company. I was hoping to hear about good (or bad) reputations.

I've been told by several people that Dale Sailing is rather expensive.

I don't know anything about Celtic Marine. Do you have contact details? Google gives references to several companies with this name, dealing with various marine activities.

Dale Sailing has always been a bit pricey, but they do have the expertise and facilities.

(price is not always the best datum)

I have not heard of Windjammer despite being relatively close to them. I am noting their name for the future.

Celtic Marine have carried a couple of straight forward jobs on my tub, and have been very satisfactory.

Well worth talking to them.

We can have a beer or two in our club whilst they do the job.

Thanks for the link. I was a bit surprised by the company description, i.e. "risk and project control, technical services and representation, integrated, independent advice and actions for marine and inshore/onshore works".

Windjammer is a small company at Milford Docks. Their website is here.

Yes I was too.

Not sure what goes on with the web page but their contact details are as follows;

Celtic MarineUnit 5a Fishmarket Quay Maritime Quarter, Swansea, SA1 1UP

p: 01792464902 f: 01792467054

They are definitely small boat and yatch people, and nothing to do with bi-valves!!

Windjammer look good.

Thanks. I'll probably speak to Celtic when next in Swansea. However It may be best for us to use an engineering contractor in the Haven.

Must admit that I havnt used Windjammer, but have heard good things about them.

Dale , on the other hand, have not always reached expectations. Best to deal directly with John Reynolds there.

ooops, there goes the 1000!

Thanks for your response.

As you evidently know the area, can I ask if there is any reason to avoid Milford Marina? We are debating whether to apply for a berth there.

Do Celtic actually still exist? I thought they were taken over by Shaddow? Haven't been to Swansea Marina in months, so would be interested to hear if this is true.

You might be out of luck there. I've heard all berths are booked for the summer...but they did give priority to annual berth applications as opposed to the quarterly ones, so give them a call. We like it there...but depends on what you want.

had 4 years there no problems very helpful and professional staff. also had a mooring at gellyswick bay if the weather was bad and you wanted boat in marina a phone call to windjammer marine they would go out in all weathers , tow your boat on to a berth in marina, cheaper than what it cost in fuel to drive from cardiff.dave is gentleman, very friendly marina.there was achap that used to drive from the solent to do his sailing from there highly reccomended

Thanks to both of you.

Looks like Windjammer is the best option.

Stayed there on Saturday night, lots & lots of empty spaces.

Just our luck to be directed to a berth 12'6" wide when our beam is 12'. Talk about squeezing in!

Disadvantage to us is access
Freeflow HT-2hrs to HT plus 1 or 2 locks in before the next freeflow... does limit things somewhat, plus all the hassle of calling up, hanging around etc.

Yes, lots of empty berths right now, but I did say "summer". It's what I heard from one of the marina staff. A lot of people like to book 1-3 months during June -August, and I assume that's what was meant. You're right about access being limited, but the only full access marina is Neyland lower basin, and that is very expensive. Personally, Milford Marina has more positives than negatives for us (or we wouldn't be there), but it depends what's important to each individual.
