Mildew removal

I no longer own a yacht but well remember the annoying spectre of mildew /mould when unable to get to the boat. Shore-based today I had to cure some ceiling board dampness a home. I used some mildew remover manufactured by Dettol. I utilised a Covid mask and glasses for any protections needed- it was used at arms length
The White ceiling had areas about 12" diameter and in most cases also the wall was covered. I applied the remover using its spray fitting exceeding the obvious areas. The results were remarkable .waited 20 mins for it to dry but the mould just disappeared in 2mins. Washed with clean water - and the ceiling and wall was in pristine condition- no rubbing or lifting of the surfaces or paint. From the very slight odour it is probably a bleach- based product. thought I would pass this on to others. No connection.

Yes it contains sodium hypochlorite , and sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) so take note of warnings on the bottle about surfaces for which it is not suitable.
I keep Patio Magic diluted 1 + 9 in a spray bottle for general mould control around the house, but of course it does not bleach mould stains in the same way.

You don’t want to be breathing in Patio Magic, judging by the effect it has on me when I spray around outside the house.

The safety data says , "Do not breathe spray, mist"

If you want a cheap source of chlorine for spraying, without the soapy/detergent stuff from "thick" bleach then chlorine tablets are worth a go (dissolved in water in a spray bottle)

I'm glad you liked the product... but.

Before you pick your safety equipment you READ THE SDS for ingrideients and proper protective equipment. Easy to find on line with Google. Yes, it is 2.5-5% bleach, about the same as household bleach, but with a bleach-resistant surfactant added. For example, a COVID mask (did not define--let's assume you mean a surgical mask) will stop some aerosol particles but no chlorine. There are specific masks for bleach in a confined space.

Last week I watched a number of people painting boats wearing N95 masks, oblivious to the fact that a particle mask is transparent to vapors. The masks did nothing other than make then look, well, ignorant of chemistry. Of course, they could also have read the ingredients and precautions and learned that with good ventilation no mask is needed.

Just sayin', you need to read the ingredients, not guess.
