Mildew on cushions

I've got a set of badly mildewed berth cushions. The vinyl(?) exterior is ingrained with black residue and the the rubberized fabric(?) inside is covered in patchy midlew black staining.

I've scrubbed them in the bath with shower curtain cleaner, which got most of the black off the outside, but has done nothing for the inside. Trouble is, they've dried and still stink badly of mildew. Does anyone know the best way to clean this type of cover thoroughly and most importantly kill the smell?

The foam cushions are pretty horrible, too. Is there a recommended product for shampooing them with? Any suggestions gratefully received!

Cheers
Chris

We successfully removed all traces mildew (and moss everything else that had built up over the years) from our hatch cover this spring following the advice from the forum to use a pressure washer. If it won't destroy the fabric, I'd say it would be worth a try, especially on the foam inners. There are also proprietary mildew cleaners from both chandleries and DIY stores (guess which is cheaper). They work, and help prevent re-infestation on the deckhead, but I've never tried them on fabric.

We have had the same problem on curtains (cotton) and washed them with bleach etc . - helped a little. Then someone on the forum suggested Detox - this worked a treat. I don't understand why it was so much better than bleach as it appears to be the same chemical - but it really works.

As above , try all three and then try frabreeze to reduce the smell , does seem to linger doesnt it. Once clean and smelling of roses try to get some air around them when ever possible .Ventilation is the only way i know to prevent mildew.
Hope this helps./forums/images/icons/smile.gif
