Just read Mike Peyton’s bio by Dick Durham.

A superb book about a fascinating man. The stories of his childhood in a very poor family, army life in WWII, marriage to a nice middle class girl, life by the R Crouch, sailing history, and above all his cartoons.

I could find it on Kindle, probably out of print.

World of books had 2 copies, now one. Will look forward to reading it.

As you mentioned, not on kindle 😞

Very much my fav boaty writer.

I have all his books/cartoon collections and would 'project' a selection onto screen when, years ago, I used to teach the RYA's stuff at the local tech college. I encouraged my 'studes' to dip into his books, for there are acres of seamanship lessons in 'em. And fun.

I found him at the ExCel Boat Show one January sat at a table in the YBW pagoda, signing copies of his latest and, of course, I sat myself down while he scrawled his name on the flyleaf. I mentioned the above, and he silently opened his book at a couple of his 'toons - then 'eye-pointed' to the clutch of YBW magazine editors standing gossiping further back in the tent.... There, over several pages, were caricatured Andrew Bray, Des Sleightholme, Geoff Pack, and James Jermain.... immortalised and clear as day!

His cartoons are genius.

I may be wrong (I read it 30 years ago possibly) but he painted almost all parts of his boats grey to save paint, decision making or something.

I read Einstein or some other genius had a wardrobe of five identical suits to save them wasting time upon irrelevant decisions.

So Peyton was a genius in more than one way.

I'm rather smug, in that I have most of his cartoons-books on my shelves. Also in there somewhere is Dick Durham's biography of his friend.

The Authorised Biography
You Excel, Sir 😃

Well there are now one fewer s/h copies available .

By the by the Open University (!) claim to have an epub edition for lending, should anyone here be enrolled as a student?

I have given away nearly all of my marine books and pilotage, with the exception of Des Sleigholmes wonderful -and slim-Old Harry caricatures - and who inspired them I wonder?
He claimed to write them in his head, muttering aloud, whilst commuting along to the day Ed job!

Now you've started something. This thread made me get out my 4 volumes of Peyton cartoons and several JDS Old Harry books.
When Mike Peyton was compiling Imminent All Areas he found he was missing an earlier copy of one of his cartoons books which I was pleased to lend him. He sent me a copy of the new book inscribed "hoping such things never happen to you".
Several did.

That’s what I loved too. It was all so relatable😊.

I mean: Who hasn’t put a bowsprit through a wheelhouse side window when the reversing petrol engine ‘ failed to reverse as expected’, or been silhouetted by a searchlight whikst exposed on the foredeck wrestling with a dragging anchor without their trews on?

I shall read the book and then put it up on here for a fiver so someone else can too.

I have a copy of one of his delightful books, from the US. Front cover is a pic of a boat struggling with two spinnakers.. Skipper remarking that he got the idea from a Marylin Monroe film.
