Update here.... Laura Deker
Anybody heared what happened with the Danish girl how wanted to sail around the world? It was suppose to be heard in court this week as the "authorities" wanted to prosecute her parents if they let her go.
Personaly I would just move country!
It is a great achievement, whatever age you do it at, although the way the media are playing it you might assume it was non-stop; and technically as he went through the Panama Canal, where presumably he had to take a pilot and line handlers; was it strictly solo?![]()
I think one thing that has been missed here is the record he has beaten. The American kid who claimed the record earlier this year did not, as far as I recall, round the capes or do the trip in one. It seems he (MP) has done what he set out to do and taken the record. I imagine in the USA they didn't start running their lad down, even before he had his feet on dry land.
Well done Mike! It could be the start of a great sailing career or something to look back on with pride in later life.

Is this the chap whose father was on a boat next to him all the way round to tell him what to do, or am I thinking of some other young adventurer?
That's just the sort of comment we have come to expect from you kristifer. Sour grapes?
Just typical British mentality I suppose.
The lad probably has a damn site more experience tha most of us, now.
It seems that most people take great delight in slating young people these days, yet when they have the balls to go out and do something, they take equal delight in criticism. Has everyone lost the habit of encouragement?
I talked to Nathan (on Kudu) who is doing his round britain solo, this morning. A very pleasant, down to earth lad who is just getting on with doing what he wanted to do. If there was a little more of that attitude these days, I think we'd be living in a better place.
So, over to you kristifer, let's hear about all your tales of dering do. I can't wait.........
Really?
Judging by your post MP already outranks you on the maturity scale at the age of 17 and you had a +30 year head start.
I was pleased to see Sir RKJ on Channel 4 News last night praising Mike's achievement. If you can make it to Gunwharf Quays tomorrow morning then why not turn out to welcome him back?
I think the Dutch girl is too young at 13. I don't think anyone under 16 should be attempting a solo circumnavigation!
Not according to international conventions on child soldiers, you can't.Tough call really. What age is suitable? At 16 you can go and join the army and potentially die for your country...
There is no international conventions on child soldiers, not in the real world pal and trust me i have been there. there is nothing on this earth quite like having a 9 yr old trying to blow you away with an AK at 150 yards. Not according to international conventions on child soldiers, you can't.
That just describes me (less of the balding though if you don't mind) so when can we go and who's our sponsor
It's a damn good achievement for him, maybe another will do it in an improved way having learn't from Mike's problems and breakdowns.
