I'm think about buying one of these as a back up and for trips in the dinghy. Online for about £50
Anyone bought one? what is your opinion of it?
I like the idea that it can take 4xAA rechargables.
Is the waterproof case any good or should I splash out and buy a waterproof VHF.

Thanks

I bought a cheap Cobra, similar bit of tack but 5 watt max transmit (£85)and it is a cracker, the midland should be ok but i think is only 1 or 2 watt.
ok for short distance work.

Buy a proper waterproof handheld. If you don't want to spend a lot, get a Standard Horizon HX270E for £85. Excellent radio with 3 year warranty and a battery tray for AA batteries if you want to use them.

I second the Standard Horizon HX270E, mine has excellent battery life, and is clear on both transmission and reception. It also came with a holder for alkaline batteries which is useful for the grab bag.

Another big vote for the Horizon. It also came out best in the recent PBO handhelds group test.
Lasts ages on one charge, and has the spare backup AA tray. I bought a charger off ebay for 2.99 to hook it up to the 12v.

Another vote for Standard Horizon. I bought mine from Malthouse, who is on here sometimes. I got a good deal and good service. The radio appears to be very well build and sturdy, it has worked very well everytime I've used it. I used it a lot last year as I sailed most of the time single handed.

I bought one of the cheapo ( at the time) XMs, years ago. The only problem has been the need for a new battery pack. It came with a case for AAs if you want to use them. From the waterproof aspect, it has been fine as I suspect most are, unless they're in your pocket when you fall in.

One of the jobs I bought radio for was to be in my pocket, or on my belt, if I went overboard. I read a report of a speedboat that overturned in the Solent, one of the guys onboard had a VHF and called for help.

i purchased one of these and find it ok as a back up etc, bit fiddly on the channel change but for the price a usefull bit of kit that wont make you cry when it goes swimming, as for the waterproof case mine did not last long. radio cost less than £50 "just" and with case and rechargables inc charger from j.g technollogy including postage.
some time ago ST did a group test on h/h's where they came out ok i dont remember which issue though.
