We've had one since '97 and found it very good indeed. Some of the "toys" we never use, but others such as automatically generated tidal curves are really rather good. The database includes 15000 lights for Western Europe and includes Lat, Long and light characteristics. The press of a button will list the nearest 20 lights in ascending distance from your position. Not something I've used in anger though. The unit stores 500 waypoints and 20 routes. The internal battery only seems to last about 2-3 years or so (we've replaced ours twice) which means that periodically, you will have to re-enter all your waypoints. Battery replacement is a quick and easy job with a soldering iron, cheap too. The bad news is that as far as I know, there is no manufacturer's support available. When Micrologic ceased trading in UK, I believe somebody took over the support of the handheld units, but not the fixed base units. Unfortunately I can't remember who or where this was, but seem to think it was in the Portsmouth area. Hopefully, the one you've been offered will include a handbook as not all the functions are intuitive (at least, not to me!). If the unit works (wiggle the data input plug to make sure it's a sound connection - the only problem we've had) and the price is right, I reckon it could be a good buy.

All this, of course, is offered in the best of faith but with no actual guarantee.....

Regards

I had a Micrologic Sportsman (handheld)... the chip packed up twice and they fixed it. Then the company went bust.

I wouldnt bother unless its for free.

I have a Micrologic 250 on my boat and have found it excellent; the first time I needed the internal battery fitting I had it done by Swale Marine (Electrical) Ltd.,, Old Stable, North Road, Queenborough, Kent ME11 5AG (Tel: 01795 580930). It cost £25 for a new battery including fitting and post. I think they might do other work on the 250 but so far all I have needed is the battery. My 250 came with the boat when I bought her and I should think it is about 10 years old.
