Another problem is a starting arrangement.

Alternators are converted to motors. Some projects are being done in a rather experimental manner like this bike conversion

This series of Youtube videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrNYIqhkTQc are far more considered although not directly applicable.

Maybe your existing alternator could be wired through a multi-pole relay with protective devices for over temperature, oil pressure etc., to convert from the charging to a starting circuit.

It's possible, but it would require a lot of circuitry for an alternator to function both as an alternator and as a starter motor. To make it a motor, a 3-phase supply needs to be wired direct to the stator, but there are motor controllers available which could do this.

The newer generation of automatic stop-start cars use a combined alternator/starter.

What a pity that a good interesting thread was ruined but some thoughtless people.

Yep.
Ran through the thread with SWMBO, a retired teacher I should point out.
I dont know about thoughtless people but she soon recognised one as the classroom bully who eventually went running to to teacher, "Miss, Miss, Mathew has just called me a rude name"!

( fortunately the "classroom bully" already has me on "ignore" so wont read this! :D )

Yes he will! :D

. . . but please don't spoil this new thread

Never really understood the concept of joining a forum and then choosing to ignore some of the messages - must make it difficult to understand a thread. Oh...

OK, back to the subject. The original micro generator idea was to use a Honda GX25 engine. Then 2Tizwoz raised the question of starting. If a micro generator is going to be enclosed in some sort of sound-deadening box, electric start would be an advantage.

Well, I noticed the other day that Ryobi now make electric start strimmers - how about using one of those as a power unit? It's 30cc, so similar power output to the Honda, and only about £130. Downside is that it's 2 stroke rather than 4 stroke. It has it's own 12v battery, and recharges it whilst in use.

Another direction ????

Having built several micro gen sets for remote radio operation I will happily chuck in my ideas later when I get a chance but for now, Has anyone even thought of building a fuel cell to charge the battery bank? have a look at http://www.efoy.com/en/fuel-cells-products.html for the target. YES £££££££££.

Now a small methanol powered fuel cell would be a great thing for a boat provided that the cost could be brought down to real levels.

There are lots building very small scale cells already so why not build one just for the boat peeps.

Maxpower have small fuel cells aimed specifically at boat use. Unfortunately, the cost isn't "down to real levels"!
