Can anyone recommend a maintenance and repair book/manual for a 35ish yacht, similar to the Haynes manuals for cars, that deals with hull (grp), deck, winches, engine, drive gear, steering, electrical etc something that is within the capabilities of a person with moderate to good craft skills. There are some on Amazon and other outlets but it is knowing what to buy.

What about Nigel Calders books?

This may be heresy but I find his book, although excellent, to be far more about Engineering than about Maintenance. There seems to be very little about 'How do I fix my ..... when it goes wrong.' but lots on how it works and how it is installed.

I find the Glassfibre Boat Manual ISBN 0-356-12357-X to be pretty good. It's quite old now and may be out of print but Google finds several used ones from £0.65.

Thanks I bought Nigel Calders book on Amazon and the boat maintenance bible by Adlard Coles Nautical, I'm not religious, I will give these a go see what happens.

Don Casey Sailboat Maintenance

Couldn't help but read that post to the tune of the old 'Don Amott - King of Caravans' advert.

I agree with the comment about Calders book, it tends to assume a reasonably high degree of competancy in the reader - it would be ideal in company of something more rudimentry or graphic.

Pat Manleys 'simple boat maintenance' is good and compact but some of the photographs are very amateurish -it could do with a new issue with professional pictures.

Just beware of the kind that in chapter 1 say you need a toolbox .. like this ... and show a pic of a screwdriver. Then in chapter 2 talk about major works like adding teak decks.

They are not worth the shelf space , let alone the price, and tend to be written by committees rather than individuals.

the choice of books seems pretty well covered - as someone slightly ahead of you on this road, could I recommend a slow and steady approach and dont bite off more than you can chew at any particular time. It is easy to put more emphasis on maintenance than on sailing, and the boat remains in dock because of an unfinished task. And of course tasks to make the boat more seaworthy are the only real priority. Cosmetic stuff is way down the line.
