MGB81 in Berthon for a refit.

And I’m hankering after a wooden Boat...

With this and Tally Ho blog...

You didn't think you could make a remark like that and get away with it!?!

You know, I'm nearly 20 years into wooden boat ownership and wouldn't change it for the world.

Everything electrical, galley, heads, engine, box, steering, deck fittings, navigation, stainless steel, heating, covers, cushions, anodes, antifoul, skin fittings is all the same as a plastic boat.

Buy the right hull, from the right builder, in the right materials, in the right condition, maintain it like your life depended on it, and its an easier and lower cost proposition than a pile of plastic with leaking hull windows and outdrives and osmosis.

Buy a cheap soggy pile of iron fastened larch and it will end with a chainsaw and tears.

thought you might comment.

having looked for a couple of years for another boat and realising that unless I spend a figure approaching 1m on a Seward 39 or 42, or possibly go the commercial route of a new Lochin 36 or 40 I don't think there is actually a new boat built that I like... and very very few motor boats built in the last 20 years that I like for the size of boat I want.

Don't want a 70's Nelson.

Might be tempted by a Dale Nelson 38, but to be honest want aft cockpit... would give up a big cabin for a cockpit any day.

so maybe the answer is in wood. I will soon have the time to maintain...

Too much of a generalisation. I looked at them carefully.

The 34 is pointless, too narrow, no accomodation, they are wet but you are inside, so its not a factor, they do roll, but firm up as you get to 14 knots or so.

The 40 is very worthwhile. Much wider, better accomodation. IF you wanted a long term cruise up the west coast, across the sea to Norway or similar, this is the boat to do it in if you don't want to spend big money.

well its not that I don't like them, but the majority seem to have had a tough life, that's the issue more than anything.

I actually quite like Soundtrack that's been for sale for about a year, a 113.
