Metered Shore Power Cable - Where to buy?

Try a caravan shop or website (anything to do with shorepower or 12V electrics... I look there first). If not, try phoning around other marinas (I picked one up from Hythe marina last year for less than £100).

Buy a domestic digital electric meter on ebay- £15 ish, a couple of metres of arctic electrical cable- £4 and a male and female shore power connectors - £6. Connect the cable to the meter, sealing the cable entrance holes, and the plug and sockets on the appropriate ends and put this is series with your shore power cable at the boat end, down below if possible. I have mine in a water proof tupperware box in the gas locker (gas bottle removed !). Works a treat.

Thank you. I called up Metermaid. They were very helpful, but wanted to charge about the same price as the marina.

Do you think I could buy one of these:

And put it in an IP67 housing with a transparent lid, add some grommets for the cables in and out, and use that? Or do you think the marina will insist on off the shelf kit?

I'd be worried the meter would corrode in a marine environment, but I could drench it in corrosion block.

??

Isn't there one on the for sale forum at the moment. If it's gone they do seem to crop up fairly often. That's how I got mine.

If I remember correctly, MDL are actually charging less than £144, worth asking?

That's more or less what I did (except I already had a free sample meter - I work in the industry) about 12 years ago and it's been fine. Lives in the cockpit summer and winter. No corrosion issues, but I would recommend liberally smearing all metalwork with vasaline, particularly the plug and socket. The polycarbonate box is getting a little yellow, however, but the meter can still be read fairly easily.

As to acceptability, it depends how reasonable your marina is. Fortunately mine has (so far) been quite happy with this arrangement. Probably worth asking first.

If I was making a new one from scratch I would probably use a small electronic meter and a smaller box. The Ampy unit mentioned is neat, and meters are also now available in 1 unit wide DIN rail mount modules which could fit into e.g. a garage consumer unit, giving other options, but probably not available yet as second hand stock.

Hi,

Can someone tell me where I can get my hands on a metered shore power cable which will cost me less than the £144 my marina wants to charge me?

Thanks!

I think more the question is whether marina will allow you to supply your own meter ? I would expect them to require a CE / or test mark and certificate ? as minimum ?

Some marinas, mention no names, used to "lease" the meter at near purchase price, you leave marina and they required it back. they would then "lease" it out at same price to next poor unfortunate. Own meters ? not allowed !

£85.00 is a good price, they sold for that on eBay when the usual price was around £140. All you then need is a 10m extension which you can make up for around £20, or it can be cheaper in the caravan shop.

Finding Metered leads cheaper

Ok, I have just had the same shopping around and initally came across MDL Marinas who at the moment only do the 1m metered extension for £69 and is pick-up only. The company that makes them is Rolec and the product is the Rolec Leadmaster. On contacting the company they quoted me £60 plus £13 Postage PLUS 20% VAT for this extension only so total = £87.60.

I then searched through Ebay under different descriptions until I found a user caller Oceanstar2008 who were selling for £60 + £10 postage incl VAT.
I researched their contact details and SURPRISE SURPRISE it was Rolec selling out of the same office. I then asked them if they would do a deal on an inclusive 15m METERED lead and they said £75 plus postage PLUS VAT. When I said that the listing INCLUDED VAT they backed down and said £75 plus £10 postage in total for a NEW Rolec Leadmaster. This is a saving of about £100 on what this set up normally costs so worth a look!!
