just received a letter from our marina.
we were getting electricity @ £10 per month un-limited supply

now they want £100 deposit for a metered cable + 12p a unit ( not sure if vat applicable on this cost or if inc. )

how does this compare with other marinas
your comments would be appreciated
 
As I understand it ...

Where I am ... they want 110 quid for the cable and meter which includes the key / padlock to make sure no-one else uses your socket ...

But as I understand it - electricity units cannot be charged for greater than they receive supply at ... BUT they can charge a handling fee / supply fee on top ... so bill is supposed to be split .... watts used at commercial electricity co rate + another line at marina fee for supply ...

Basically at end of day - they can charge what they like !!

I decided at end of day toi stay with the "own cable" to pay as you go coin slot meter and not the 110 quid cable / socket next to boat !!

You are right, by law they can only charge what they pay for it. They are not allowed to surcharge the per-unit price. What they can do is borrow £110 off you as a deposit (on which they now get the interest) and a notional service charge, for fixing the meter, reading it, and keeping it in good order. The service charge is supposed to be at-cost, but, well, you can sing any tune you like for that.

This and last summer: Ostend - 500 quid/6 months all in - berth, unlimited electricity and water.

Last winter in the UK - Gillingham - no charge if you're on the boat. Meter plus ''cost'' for 24h electricity supply

This winter in the UK - expect to be ripped off.
 
As i understand the law, you are not allowed to make profit from the sale of electricity unless you are a "licenced supplier" as it were. MDL just charged us £165 for a lead and charge resedential berth holders 8p/KWh.

But isn't that what I said ?? That units are at Electricity Co. supplied cost and that privision of can be charged additional ??

I deckined the meter and socket - stayed with the wandering lead and plug into communal Pay-as-you-Use slot ... which works out very well.
It used to be a bind that often your plug would be disconnected for another to get a supply ... but now that many have gone the "personal" meter supply - the 6 sockets of the slot-meter are now reasonably free ... the ones like me who use this system are also reasonable about sticking the £ coins in .. we stick them in when needed and don't worry that another may get a bit more than another etc.

Cost to me per annum .... probably about a fiver !! instead of the other system where I would pay more than that per month !!

You answered my first post, which was after skip-reading your original. I quickly realised my error and added 'You are right' , but my post amounted to a restatement of yours - I saw the phrase 'they can charge what they like' and jumped without looking...... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
