I am looking for a new project and I have come across a picture on the internet of a Mersey rivers class / jewel class open boat (based on a small Morecombe bay prawner), I was just wondering if anyone knows of any for sale? or has any information on the class?

i have attached a photo of a rivers class i found on the internet

Super boat. When I was but 14 years old my mate's old man had one and we spent many days out on the Humber. I'm not sure my concept of fast was well developed then, but it was a cracking sail.
That picture epitomises them. You NEED a cockpit coaming.
His was called Clwyd, but haven't been able to find any more recent references to it apart from a tale of a trip on the Mersey.
I think his was built by Crossfields at Arnside.
There was one for sale called Styx recently and there is one in Ireland which is for sale but has to stay in the fleet over there. (?)
I seem to think there were only a dozen built. Styx for Sale but may be an old ad.

Also this from ScuttlebuttEurope
"FEATURED BROKERAGE
1912 Rivers Class Gaff Cutter, £6,500. Located in Plymouth, United Kingdom.

The Rivers Class was an early day racer from Liverpool racing under the burgee of the Royal Mersea YC reminiscent of the Morcombe Bay fishing boats design and based on the earlier Jewel Class. 10 were built with 6 known survivors of the class but more may turn up as these pretty little yacht become more appreciated. 23' on deck, 17'wl, 6' beam with 3'draft.

Planked in pitch-pine on grown oak frames with 2 steamed intermediates make her a heavily constructed little yacht and probably explains why she has survived so many years since she was built by Crossfields of Arnside in 1912.

The yacht had a major refit in the 1990's when she was refastened and a new deck laid in quarter sawn pine over ply on new deck beams. The original oval cock-pit was rebuilt, all rigging replaced on her keel-stepped varnished mast and new sails and she still has no engine.

There is one here on the Isle of Man that I think I heard is for sale. She is Esk, drop me a quick email and I will try to contact her owner for you. She is in good sailing condition having had a pretty major refit a while ago by Ken Harris of Brixham Trawler Vigilence fame.

My email address is mclark@manx.net

Mike
