We have all seen the Cowes video, now just stumbled on the Mersey Ferry almost being run down by a tanker... quite an evasion on the part of the tanker skipper as he was steaming at some speed in the relatively narrow river.

Ship turns quite a lot towards Liverpool side, looks like hes in full reverse with a bow thruster full pelt too..

I know perspective makes it look closer but close enough for a major course change!

Ferry near miss

To paraphrase Bruce Willis,

'who's driving that ferry, Stevie Wonder ?!'

10 out of 10 to the skipper of the Ramira, that was not easy and could have ended up a big mess in various ways.

Makes the pink spinny incident look a bit minor really. The potential for disaster there was frightening.
He could have set of a few seconds later or just headed under it's stern.
It's that bloody Gerry Marsden.

How come the ferry is under Birkenhead colours, thats a Wallasey ferry paid for by Wallasey ratepayers,I was one 20yrs ago?

The ferries are mow combined as "Mersey Ferries" & do a triangular trip Wallasey - Liverpool - Birkenhead - Wallasey. The fares have gone thro the roof to so they virtually only carry tourists now, The days of a cheap & efficient river crossing for commuters are long gone I fear.

I fondly remember perambulating clockwise around the top deck against the normal flow. People would get really annoyed with me & with a bit of a wind iver tide swell it became quite hard to avoid collisions. :D Great entertainment for a 20 something bored with life. The ferry trips were always the highlight of my working day.

Looking at the video, the tanker is going faster than the ferry, more or less in the same direction. If the Captain of the ferry slowed down then fair enough he should have kept a better lookout, but Ramira is still the bigger and faster ship, and should have stood off

They were great when I was a kid. You could get on at the Pier Head and stay on all day as the fares were only collected at the Wirral side!

Well apart from the ferry going at 90 degrees to the Ramira, and the latter is a TANKER constrained by draught, which the ferry seemed not to even notice when blithely setting off then tried to cut in front of, causing a rather serious emergency course change...damned unfair the way the ferry skipper was disciplined for such good seamanship
