A Mate and fellow berth holder wants to fit trim tabs to His one Year old Merry Fisher 805.
wp1234 of this Parish who is almost next door in the Marina has fitted electronic ones it seems.
What der reckon wp?
Me man doesn't fancy those types.
He fancies hydraulic 'Bennet' types.
Has anyone fitted tabs to one of these vessels?
If so, what type/make, how much were they and what result?

Any snags etc?

Hi,
I'm looking at a MF805 myself at the moment and I'm curious as to why you would need tabs on one. None of the ones I've looked at have them.

Is it just for load leveling or does it help cruising ? I was of the impression that they would be fairly useless on a semi displacement hull. I had them on my Bayliner and couldn't plane without them but I was looking forward to a life of boating without having to bother with the pesky things !

I've been looking at the details of a few of these recently and haven't seen any with trim tabs fitted. Would be interested to hear why he thinks they are needed though

So far as I'm aware the hull is planing rather than semi-displacement.
 
Main reason I fitted them I guess was to sort out the annoying port list underway when three or four adults aboard all sitting to port .The QLs have sorted that out very well in fact the reaction when they are deployed is pretty spectacular and bloody quick, you have to be a little careful not to deploy them too quickly or you will be taking a mega sheer to port or starboard.
Of course they also push the bow down quite easily but since the 805 isn’t a fast boat this really wasn’t my prime consideration.
Personally think it’s a matter of positioning the unit in the right place on the transom to get the maximum effect; if they are badly aligned I can imagine the units will not deliver the amount of upwards thrust you expect.
They get a huge endorsement from me. Also of course there’s no maintenance to be done on the QLs , no anodes , no oil leaks no rust just a bit of a gentle scrub every now and then.

Whats his reason for wanting them then. The main benifit I find is, I can see over the bows if I'm downstairs. other wise I'm blind if I dont drop the bow.

Cant see this problem with a Merry fisher. There may be a small improvement in speed, if it's trimmed right, but hardly noticable unless some thing is wildly out.

Using them for leveling is fraught with problems, as that just mean you lean twice as much on the next wave, though can help on long sea trips, which aint really what a M Fisher does.
 
A very easy fit out this is the only hole you need to drill The electrical cable through the transom to the QL modules .

Would redistribution of weight not have been a better option.

The reason I say this is. The main advantage of trim tabs, is to drop the bows in a head sea, or more importantly to raise the bows in a following sea, thus avoiding a broach, or cart wheeling.

Don't get that one /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
If QLs or any other tab supply an upwards thrust on one wave then they will provide the same upwards thrust on any wave - assuming you remain underway of course .

Rest assured I tried that first but for whatever reason the bloody thing still had a natural port list, add to that a full 250 lt tank of fuel on the Port side plus three or four adults seated again sitting at the seats on the port side it just got irritating . £400 to get rid of it was worth it for me.
 
Wont matter on the Straits, as there are nearly no waves. But crossing a big sea with waves on the beam. The result might well be say a 30 deg list going up one wave, then a 45 deg list going down the other side.

Yep.
The only other option you had was to remove the Tank and place it admidships.
Plus remove the Relatives bummin a ride.

I was down the Marina today.
wp1234 gave a 'Demo' of said tabs.
I was impressed.
They only move about an inch and a bit!
Vertically!
But Wyn (wp1234) said they do the job.

They look like a good piece of Kit.
The control panel is tidy too.
A good point.
When switched off they automatically go back to 'retract'!

I feel a bit guilty at the mo by the way.

Whilst bothering Wyn plus inviting others aboard His vessel I interupted His 'Maintenance Programne'!

He has 'plopped' the scew off of His Primary filter in the Oggin.

He was going to look for it at Low Water.
I had to dash, someone else had a prob with a boat.
