Mermaid Marine Engines - Poor service

How on earth will that help?? Mermaid/Sabre took Ford Power Products 27XXXX industrial engines and marinised them.

Tractors used structural block motors of completely different design from the industrial engines, also Ford supplied long engines to marinisers without rotating electrics, who could generally source starters and alternators cheaper direct from the manufacturers.

Only relation with agricultural was the way Mermaid made their brackets.........

Let's be accurate when telling off others peeps - Ford manufactured tractors often used industrial engines in tractors - although it made them horribly light.

Tis a shame, always excellent service when Cyril and Barbara Snare owned the company. Seems now just to be a small (insignificant?) part of a larger organisation.

+1. It was a while ago I dealt with them, but I remember these names. They were outstanding to deal with back then and could not have been more helpful. Shame it doesn't appear to be that way now.

Philiz,
Sorry you've had a bad experience with the alternator bracket for your Meteor II and apologies for the delay in my response, but I have been away from the office for over a week.

As Maverick points out I am the sales director at Power Torque, the parent company of Mermaid and I take seriously any issues that we have with products or service. The team at Poole is only very small and consequently can be very busy from time to time. This coupled with the fact that one of our parts support guys has just left has put them all under a lot of pressure recently. We are actively looking to recruit a replacement parts person and hopefully that position will be filled in the next few weeks hopefully resulting in an improved service overall. This is no excuse for not getting at least a call back, but merely an explanation of the circumstances.

I have to admit though that in the case of your bracket it is unlikely that we would have been able to assist quickly anyway. The Meteor II was based on the Ford XLD418 engine which is now 20-ish years old and even many of the base engine parts are no longer available from Ford themselves. In the case of this bracket it was a Mermaid designed part and unfortunately when we bought the assets of the company there were no drawings for 'historic' parts so we would not have been able to have one manufactured straight away without seeing your broken part first to use as a template.

We will always do our best to support our customers with issues such as this, but it is an unfortunate fact of life that we don't always have all of the answers or the stock immediately so cannot always respond to an emergency situation despite how much we would like to.

If you have any problems in the future then as I have said before you can always call me at the Coventry head office or you can call Ed Nugent our Mermaid Division Manager at Poole.

Best regards
Jon Townley

Thanks for responding Jon, much appreciated. I have now had a replacement bracket made locally, I have to say, it's better than the original, but that had managed some 17 years and had been welded before (unknown to me) so hopefully I won't need another one for a while. Clearly most of the base engine parts are readily available, it is only the Mermaid marinising parts which I might struggle with in the future. I will contact you or your colleagues if I'm struggling. Thanks again.
