Given the choice, which one of these would you buy as a fishing boat and why ...... a well used Osprey Pilothouse 26 with 260hp diesel (or similar boat) or a new fully kitted Warrior 175 with 150hp ob. The goal is to be able to fish all year round for pleasure with 1-4 anglers on board hitting channel wrecks as much as is reasonable considering the weather (up to 60 miles offshore say) and general boat fishing. It will also haul the family around on occasion :)

These are boats with quite differing capabilities on paper being representative of a couple of boat classes I have come across but are similarly priced packages to purchase so makes me wonder what difference would having either one over the other actually make for a boat primarily for angling?

Not a fisherman but, 60 miles off shore in a 'well used' boat is risky but 60 miles off shore in a 17 foot boat is madness.
A combination of a bigger used boat but powered by a new outboard would be perfect

I havent spent much time on the smaller (17ft range) boats but have heard of and know of some who take them to offshore wrecks when conditions allow. I'd prefer a bigger boat tbh and initially I wanted 2 engines as well but can live with one if all else is up to scratch (mine is a 24ft cruiser with single 5.7 Petrol/sterndrive - not suitable for fishing really and does not have the range I am after).

Osprey engine was rebuilt 2 years ago so supposed to be mechanically sound .... still, a new one would make me feel better, but costly!

I would defo go for the 26 footer, we fish all year round and in winter you really need the protection of a cabin even if its just for a warm and a break.

I have owned a Warrior 195 (no longer made) with a 150 optimax brilliant boat which is similar to the 175. We used to use up to 30 miles from port mid channel fishing but only after watching for a prolonged spell of good weather. After the Warrior I owned a Karnic 2460 (approx 25') with an inboard outdrive 250hp engine, chalk and cheese comes to mind. The larger boat was so much more comfortable and less of a worry weather wise albeit you still needed to plan well ahead. We took the Karnic across the channel to fish around Alderney & Guernsey several times and never once felt insecure although it would be fair to say we did have some arse twitching moments passing through the Swinge and one time a very bumpy ride coming home in a force 5/6, I definitely wouldn't have wanted to have been out in a cuddy boat in that sea but we did still feel safe.

I now have a Rodman 870 which is yet another step up in terms of sea handling and confidence boosting.

I would say with experiencing nearly exactly what you are planning the largest boat you can afford would serve you well assuming your model choice is made wisely

Useful insight .... I'll be coming from Jersey, fishing all round the CI, heading west to Hurd Deep area and beyond, and more northerly for other channel wrecks so I don't expect to be more than 50 miles from safe haven but maybe 75 miles plus from home. I've dropped the cuddy boat idea and have also added this to my list with one available used with 300hp ob - http://www.atlantismarine.biz/atlantis-26-sports-cabin.html Its a Cat B with 6 people onboard so should be a good option.

I take it the petrol has enough range for what you are wanting to do? I would think you would need to carry an awful lot for 300 hp!
