Mercury outboard model

Hi all,

I am trying to identify a motor I'm fixing. It doesn't appear to have a name plate/serial number fitted.

It is a 50 hp, 2 stroke, 4 cylinder mercury.

The cowling is made up of a front plate marked Thunderbolt Ignition, a wrap around band and a top plate.

It has CDI ignition.

It has 2 carbs fitted with MERCARB cast on the float chamber, they have integral fuel pumps.

If anybody could advise the years these were in production it would be great. The reason is I wish to get a service book for it.

I do have the cylmers Mariner 2-220HP 1976 - 1989 which covers the Mariner 50 (pre 1985, 4 cyl)) which from the descriptions in the book is very similar, does anybody know if this engine identical to the Mercury?

Any help would be greatfully recieved...

Not tucked behind the transom clamp bracket on the stbd side?

No I couldn't see anything. I did notice 2 small holes that may have been fixings at some point... But if there was a plate there it is long since gone...

If anybody has either of these, could you please let me know if it covers a 2 stroke 50hp 4 cylinder engine. I am confident I can identify it from the book, I just don't want to have to buy them both... Or either if its identical to the Mariner, like I think it might be...

You might also like to look for an owners manual in the download center at
http://www.brunswickmarineemea.com/ It can be difficult at times even with the model details but it might be worth the effort.

Post a picture or two with all the info you can muster on the Merc board at http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4

Seloc and Clymer manuals come a very poor second to manufacturers manuals. They usually try to cover too many models, both in size and year range.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll try the iboats forum...

I know the Clymer manuals are not the best, but as they cover so many models it might allow me to narrow down to a particular model...

I have looked up spares on a US site (as recommened http://www.crowleymarine.com/parts.cfm) and it shows the same dwg and part numbers for the merc and mariner engines (compnents of the fuel system (where my problem lies)) of the time so that adds wieght to them being the same, which I am now quite sure they are...

At the moment it looks like there were 4 cyl models up till 1986 then a 3 cyl unit was the norm...



As for parts (gasket kits etc) is there a good uk vendor recommended? Also who could supply a mercury manual???
