I got a new Mercury 3.5HP yesterday for use on the tender. The manual says it has to be transported either held upright or on one side otherwise there is a risk of oil leakage.

On previous engine (Yamaha) you could carry with the handle with the prop and leg pointing out in front of you and this is how I expected this one to be managed.

Anyone got experience of this engine?

Manuals tend to know.. ;)

If your previous engine was 2-stroke it had no oil sump (as the lube was blended into the fuel) and therefore no oil to spill.

If your new engine is a 4-stroke it will hold an amount of oil for luricating the engine and if you turn it 'wrong' the oil will find ways out to places you do not want..

4 stroke outboards vary to some extent in the way in which that may be transported or stored.

Follow the advice in the manual for the engine you now have

They can all be stored or transported upright.

Most can be laid down on one side or the other ... usually but not without exception to rest on the tiller. A small number can I believe be laid on either side. Generally they should not be laid on their gear levers ... that applies to 2 strokes also.

AFAIK they can all be carried by a carrying handle located at the back of the housing.
I am not aware of any that can be carried by a handle above the clamp bracket in the way that most 2 strokes can be carrired.

I have that same engine (3.5 4s) and it transports fine either upright or on its side - arm up. Never had a leak yet (pet or oil) and its been transported by car and in the boat on its side.
