Hi,

We are really looking forward to the meet, but my better half said what actually goes on there! mmm, good question I thought..... So unless I have missed a thread somewhere, what do most people do over that weekend? Is it Fri to Sun or just Saturday? I know food and drink is likely (especially the later), but is there any form of entertainment etc. Also I see that a trip to Newtown Creek is likely, is this an "on mass" cruise for lunch?

Anyway, sorry if this has been discussed elswhere, but I cannot find anything.

Thanks

Nick

Basically, you meet weirdos from the internet!

Hmmm, I heard a warning about them! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

<hr width=100% size=1>Someday my ship will come in, and with my luck I'll be at the airport!.

experience suggests that some boating, some drinking and a bit of eating occur.
detailed planning involving boats and families is doomed to either simply fail or create a family bust up!
Some are aiming to meet at Yarmouth Harbour Friday night and the key objective/planning element is to get into a pub prior to 2100h in order to be served food. No formal arrangements with Yarmouth will be made but a likely list of craft and an exchange of mobile phone numbers (Handheld VHFs are frowned upon in pubs and bars!) usually takes place nearer the day.
Last year we were under strict instructions to be tied up at Mercury and ready to party by 1730h so we naturally filled the time with boat handling exercises, raft building (until the Harbourmaster intervened), anchor practice and messing about in dingys - all in Newtown Creek. General consensus amongst those there last year seems to revolve around "if we can have that much fun in those conditions.........." so we will probably go for it again. It gives people the opportunity for a run on their boats (or others craft) before the serious bit a Mercury later.
Sunday could involve lunch at Cowes or the Folly for those not incapacitated from the previous 36 hours!
In summary last year probably saw 5 boats Yarmouth Friday night (weather/conditions were poor and some had to abort their trip) around 25 boats in Newtown Creek at various times 40 odd at Mercury and 10'ish over to the Island for Sunday lunch.
Hope this helps?

We haven't arranged details yet, but basically if anything like last year. Die hard alcoholics will meet at Yarmouth Friday night for skull and liver damage ( a small number of boats and people)

Several will descend on Newton Creek on Saturday morning/lunchtime to bait the harbour master by all mooring to one buoy/send people off in tenders and lose them and rescue parties have to be arranged. Several people will go aground or lose props. This is deemed quite good behaviour, as it gives everyone else something to talk about for the rest of the weekend.

Most will head directly for Mercury as it will be pissing down with rain.Lots of socialising at Mercury and in Oyster Quay (bar restaurant on site).

About 7:30ish everyone starts to descend on the marquee we will have erected on site. Bar, chairs/tables etc. Hot buffet food served about 8ish. Casual dress. Everyone stays in marquee until closing time. No entertainment laid on or required, last year most people didn't even manage to talk to all the people they wanted to, and the evening seemed way too short. Then everyone heads off to the boats with the biggest drinks cabinet like a plague of locusts (note, I am a tee totaller and have no drink on board, so no point swarming on my boat!)

Sunday morning everyone looks like hell, until someone gets out the toaster and generator and wanders round the pontoons providing breakfast. Around lunchtime, most will have emerged from pits, and discussions will take place about heading to Cowes etc for lunch - most start looking green again and head home. Die hard alcoholics head for Ferry Inn for lunch.

Most communication for Newton Creek etc takes place on Channel 77

You forgot the bit about all the teenagers having a party on my boat - while I was in the Marquee

Serious point - suggestion from Management: can we have a kids area at one end of the marquee, away from the bar and food for the kids? That way, they can all go mental and run around without crashing into food/booze/tables/grownups...

bar and food serving will probably be in another separate marquee this year. Not sure we can set aside an area specifically for kids - if you remember last year, there wasn't that much spare space, but worth thinking about. Party on one of the boats for teenagers with loads of DVD's and a few bribed childminder teenagers is maybe more realistic

"note, I am a tee totaller and have no drink on board"

Well at least one of those 2 statements is true!! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

No! Going to be an interesting season, though Kate's been out on a cold roughish day (sun was out though) and seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. Kids have had two trips in Oman recently to go dolphin watching in smallish open sportsboats in pretty rough conditions and coped pretty well

With new responsibilities you may have to curb some of that youthful enthusiasm.

You may even have to get a diesel powered old man's boat with a comfortable cabin and a fridge with more than beer inside.

I'm looking forward to meeting them and hope that Mercury does not scare them off.
