I'll be honest I would prefer a lightweight 2-stroke for our new tender, but I don't want a used one and I believe only Tohatsu are still producing a 10HP 2-stroke and they can only be bought new in the Caribbean.

So, it appears the Eurocrats have had their way and I'll be buying a 4-stroke. The current crop of single cylinder hold no interest for me being far too vibey for my liking. A small twin of around 10HP offers most of what we want but of course weight is an issue. So here's a quick round up of what is available with dry weights.

Honda BF10 - 42KG
Mercury F9.9M - 38KG
Suzuki DF9.9A - 39.5KG
Yamaha F9.9 - 39.9KG

Mercury is the lightest although reading the small print tells you that weight is without propeller.

We'll plan to use a Cooney Handylift for hoisting it on and off the pushpit, so I don't suppose a KG or 2 makes that much difference. The only thing that puts me off the Honda is that their BF20 model only weighs 4.5KG more. Now that would be fun on a small RIB :D

Which reminds me, we intend to buy a Walker Bay Genesis, probably a 310FTD or 340FTD.

Would appreciate some feedback from owners of any of the above engines and as always any other comments are most welcome :)

FWIW, I have a Honda BF8 which I believe is a de-tuned or sleeved down version of the 10, oiled up and ready to go weighs in at about 47kg. A well balanced twin, vrey smooth and almost impossible to hear at idle, just the bubbles from the exhaust. Very frugal at half throttle or less, just a bugga to lift around. It also has a lighting coil 5amp 12v which connected to a small battery would provide leccy for lights, f/f etc. Nice engine.

I've often wondered why 2-strokes aren't available in the CI. It's not in the EU and I'd have thought a half container of lightweight Tohatsu's could be sold at a good mark-up. 3.5HP, 9.8Hp and 40HP would fly off the shelves and I can;t see why you can't buy one as you are in the CI when you do so. What have I missed?

You might have just handed a good deal to someone else, if you don't move fast...
