could anybody give me some feedback on the 75hp mercury outboard,ie reliebility, fuel economy, and general runing costs the year of the motor is 1993 thankyou
That'll be the 3-cyl one, covering about 1990-1996. 2 Stroke. Kinda ok, but certianly not one of mercury's finer engines. Running costs would be perhaps 4 gals/hour at highish cruise speed. Needs 2 stroke oil too. Servicing isn't bad (if it's been well looked after) becuase ignition is solid state, carbs are easy, and there isn't much else on a 2 stroke to look at. It needs a gearbox oil change every season (easy diy, 20mins) and a water pump impeller every season or two (probably £120 for the kit, ok diy if you are reasonably ok with spanners)
If you suspect it needs lots of rebuild work best to steer clear becuase spare parts are very expensive
I bought a rib with one of these and it worked Okish. It would bog down though under load. I had the compression tested and one cylinder was down and the quote was about 1000 quid for a full rebuild. It had heavy carbon build up. So I bought a new Tohatsu - see the other thread.
If you are looking at a 2nd hand engine I'd suggest seeing it run and then get a compression tester ( about £15) and test the cylinders. For this engine you should have all cylinders measuring roughly the same, and from memory, about 100-120 psi.
If thats Ok and it runs then its likely that it will keep on doing so.
