i have just bought a picton 150gts with a mercury 75hp outboard. they have not been used for around 10 years. i have had the cover off the motor and it all looks excellent-light film of oil over everything and no corrosion to speak of-also have a feeling that it has been winterized when they finished using it last as the spark plugs are only finger tight.

i cannot seem to find what year it is or any infomation on this model so any advise on this and any hints and tips about getting it up and running again would be great.

mercury 75hp
4 cylinder
engine number 9427753.

i will try to add a picture, its got like an oval hood with a moulded handle around the back-a clamshell design with a separate top,at the front it has a square "mercury" panel with a switch type key for opening the hood.decals are a black and grey stripe with a thinner red stripe though the middle!! if ya know what i mean. lol

Quick guess, 1985...maybe 86, and may have been built in Australia..

but jfm will be along shortly to tell you the year, where it was built, and what the chap who built it had for tea.

9427753 = Belgian made, 1985

Should be able to find an Operation and Maintenance manual in the Download center at http://download.brunswick-marine.com/download/main;jsessionid=105vjo07c1lcd?type=corp Not always easy though!

( confirm the year while you are there too)

good advice on re-awakening a sleeping outboard on the iBoats forums

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086

Also i recommend the Mercury/ mariner board at iBoats for help and advice on any problems you have that are not answered adequately on here.

You can look up age online, as VicS has done for you. A few things though:

1. This design dates from 1960s and is a gorgeous engine. All roller bearings, big ends, little ends and mains, and 5 main bearings. Lovely stuff. Shame previous owner has scuffed the paint so much but that is superficial

2. The decals are consistent with 86 and 87. I'm pretty sure, but memory bit hazy now so wouldn't stake my life on it, that 85 had brown band decals. 84 certainly did, but I think 85 did too. So there is a mismatch between VicS's look-up year and the decals

3. That serial number plate is DEFINITELY not original. I am 100% sure, and i owned mercs in the is size range with 1981 and 1984 model years, plus others, and i have pics of them somewhere. The standard serial number plate has the writing in portrait format, has serial number stamped across the top, Merc logos and stuff in slightly proud lettering (done by stamping or etching maybe?) below, and is affixed with 2 rivets not cross head screws. So that motor might have been stolen earlier in its life. Nothing much you can do about that now I guess!

4. The power trim cylinders have bull nose ends to the rams, with a ball bearing in each of the two ends. You can see them in one of your pics. This new trim system was first introduced in 1984, replacing the earlier system. you need to keep those ball bearings well greased so they spin freely

Good luck with it and post pics if you do a respray!

sounds great and i`m getting excited now. i know i`ve got some work to do but it`ll keep me busy in the winter. roll on summer days.
yes, i thought the number plate seemed a little "after market".
i didnt look at the boat, trailer or motor close before i bought it because i have just seen it sat for years and years in a drive while walking the dog,my offer was accepted so i just dragged it home asap.
if it was stolen it was a long time ago and i dont think i will submit it into the police station.

thanks

+ 1 to above,

trying to double check the serial no ( as quoted/photo ) but my 3 lists ( on-line, CD & paper ) have a slight difference on this No /year ...............getting a wee bit crossed eyed now as I have been in-putting real work on the PC all day..........
