Hi all,

I took delivery of a Mercury 6hp 2 stroke outboard engine after buying it online and am getting a bit worried I have been scammed.

Does this motor have some sort of steering lock at all? Will the outboard turn if it is not lowered all of the way?

I don't have anything high enough to mount it properly so am just using a stack of garden chairs at the moment!

If anyone does or has owned one of these engines, I would be grateful for all your tips!

Thanks again all.

Some out boards have a tension screw under the engine .

I will take a look thank you, does it have a particular shape?

Also, any ideas why someone would apply some sort of spray to an outboard's engines-l1600.jpg?

Not that uncommon to protect it from the elements but judging from the pic it hasn't been run much since it was applied. It may well have taken a dunk in the brinny, half the people I know have dropped their's in at some point or at least expect to, but 2 strokes are resilient to that if drained, dried, oiled, cleaned out quick and restarted (it's a half hour job to drain carbs, pull plugs, turn over with fogging oil and re-assemble to start and if done immediately doesn't appear to have any lasting detrimental effect). As Seastoke says it will have a steering tensioner screw or bolt on it somewhere. Usually a butterfly affair and yes they can tighten up with a bit of corrosion of the aluminium. Work it loose and add a bit of grease around the column.

There should be a tensioner on that model
I think it maybe a plastic 'butterfly' lever or similar, normally on the starboard side if that has broken off it may just expose the 'stub' the adjuster sat on. Lack of use and the motor wont turn all the way
There is a bearing at the upper end and a bush at the lower end of the shaft that made need lubing
Or a lump hammer!

Hi all,
Thanks for your prompt replies. I am still stumped here as there doesn’t seem to be anything obvious.
it does almost feel as if there is some kind of transport lock?
I will try the steering tensioner as previously mentioned.
From these images, could someone maybe highlight where I need to be looking?

mmm. digging a little deeper seized pivot tube on this model is not uncommon especially if it has sat in storage for a while. Bit like duoprops seizing to shafts. grease fills with gunk and corroded metals and sets like glue

Bit of a job to sort out via dismantling and with a press. Best left to a shop. I'd try my trick with duoprops that are not too far gone and and use a grease gun to pump in boiling water through the upper and lower grease nipples and apply gentle heat to the pivot tube so you dont melt the nylon bushes. This can sometimes melt the grease sufficiently so you can pump it out with new grease. Failing that it's a power head off and removal of the pivot tube and use a press to pull the steering column out for remedial work.

Thanks BruceK, obviously far from the news I wanted to hear. Whilst I could do the mechanics side of things I don't have a press.

I did have a look at this video (
) as it's a similar engine, looks like it will have to go to a shop....there was me thinking I got a good deal!
