Mercury 50hp temperature sender help

I would appreciate it if anyone could help me with information about the temperature sender on a 1997 Mercury 50hp four stroke. The gauge was reading full scale on switching the ignition on (sender shorting). Took the sender out, never seen anything like it. The sender is hollow and a spring in a plastic tube sticks out of the engine which pulled out. I don't think the sender is in the water, presumably it measures by being in contact with the head? It has 1058 on it.
Anyone know how the setup works and where I can get another one?

Thanks for the information, I got sidelined with something else but now back to it.
It would appear that the sender broke and the brass end was stuck in the hole in the engine, the spring and plastic sleeve appear to be the contents of the sender itself.
