Just acquired Mercury 4hp 4-stroke ina Romilly day-sailor.

Engine is in a well and is hard to remove.

Question is how do I flush the cooling system? I do not have the manual and cannot fit a bucket under the prop, which is what I would have done if I could. The Tomatsu book (the Merc 4hp might be a Tomatsu engine, it is so hard to tell these days) discusses a flushing plug fitted to the water tell-tale out-flow after removing the prop. I need help.....

Any thoughts?

Personally I would do my utmost to remove it and run it in a bin of water (a bucket is unlikely to be big enough)

I have This website as a source for downloading Mercury and Mariner manuals. I don't know if it includes your engine or if there is anything there to help but it might be worth a look.

I notice that there is also a forum, on one of the tabs, which might be useful.

Otherwise the iBoats forums are good for help with outboards. You'll find separate boards for each make of engine but be sure to post full engine details including year and model number with any questions

Not sure about the 4-stroke but I have a 2 Stroke 4hp Mercury that just on the underside of the Power head has a water cooling plug that you can purchase a hose adapter for. This screws in to the Hole and you then just leave on it a foot long piece of garden hose terminated with a normal self sealing hose connector. Its easy then to just plug a fresh water hose on to it let it flush for a couple of minutes and bob's your uncle.

The adapters are avaliable from any Mercury dealer

Regards

Thanks for info, I'll chase up the adapter fitting at the London Boat Show.
By the way, when I mentioned a bucket I meant a large plastic container, which is what I have used in the past, but as getting the engine out means going underneath the boat to remove a locating bar which prevents any rearward shift when the engine is in reverse gear, the task of removing the engine is really a major one.

Happy Christmas etc

The 4-strokes have the same removal stud which takes a flushing adapter.as the 2-strokes It is easy to fit and use, provided you don't drop the stud when you take it out!
