I have been refurbishing an old mercury 2.5 2t that had been sadly neglected for a few seasons and considered scrap by its owner.
I have cleared out the waterways, replaced the impeller, cleaned the carburetor, sorted out intermittent shorting of the HT cable and it runs and pumps clean cooling water.
The final problem took some finding.
I found that despite tightening the air relief cap I would get a slight fuel leak each time I laid the engine down.
I eventually spotted a tiny hairline crack at the bottom of the moulded thread on the fuel tank for retaining the fuel cap. A hot large blade soldering iron soon sealed and cured this.
Now I just need to source some new the self adhesive Mercury decals?
