Mercury 2.2 ignition parts question

I need to replace the points and condenser on my 1986 Mercury 2.2 which I am trying resurrect. Availability seems limited and prices high for the Mercury/Quicksilver parts. Anyone have any suggestions for equivalent replacement parts that would be more reasonable?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Points seem to be listed as obsolete but available at a price even in the USA ( in excess of $20) from some sources.
Had a quick look at Sierra , Mallory and CDI catalogs on line but drew a blank with those.

It is seldom necessary to replace points , they can usually be cleaned up and reused ( re-bend the spring if necessary too ... they can lose all their tension)

Any ignition condenser that will fit the space will do the trick ... Villiers engine on my lawnmower has a Ford Escort condenser!


Failing that buy a Seagull. There was brand new one up for grabs on eBay recently.
 
Many thanks for the prompt response. I haven't got the flywheel off yet to look up close but it appears that there is only a 'pad' on one side (the static one) of the points and I am used to having two pads (raised cylindrical parts attached to the static and operating arm of the points). Am I wrong?

Great to know about the condenser.
 
Sorry I don,t know what they look like !

Careful with the flywheel. It looks as though you need a "harmonic balancer puller" that will bolt on to the flywheel with high tensile bolts using three threaded holes.

The "Seagull" method might work though. Back the retaining nut off until flush with the end of the shaft. Hold the engine up off the floor by the flywheel rim and get an assistant to whack the nut/end of shaft. Use a big hammer gently rather than wellying away with a toy hammer.
Must admit, not had to do it yet but it is the recommended method for Seagulls!

Watch out for the woodruff key .. don't lose it if its loose. ( straight side parallel with the shaft axis when you refit it, not with the taper)

I presume the Mercury 2.2 is the same as the Tohatsu or Nissan in Britain. Have a look at Utube for examples. I converted a Johnson 2hp to electronic module with a universal unit off eBay for less money than a new coil and condenser. I have just updated to a Tohatsu 2.5 modded to 3.5 and that has a cdi unit. I would have thought by 1986 points would be long gone.
 
I wasn't sure if that was doable in the available space beneath the flywheel. I'll have to look into that further and check out Utube.

I'd guess it may be but very awkward.

I should have added that if you do remove the flywheel it is important when refitting it that the retaining nut is tightened to the correct torque. The key is only to locate it correctly, it must be tightened so that the drive is transmitted by the taper on the shaft. If its not tight enough you can end up damaging or even shearing the key.

I bought an appropriate puller but unfortunately it did not come with appropriately sized bolts to attach to the flywheel - 6x50mm approx. They were all larger.

I am hoping to be able to get hold of those shortly and give it a go.
 
I managed to remove the flywheel without too much trouble. The points have a cylindrical 'pad' on one side but just the bare metal of the bracket on the other. Looks like there was a 'pad' once but can't be sure. I don't know how to test the condenser other than to check it does not short to ground with an ohmeter - it was fine as far as that goes.

Initially I am just looking to get this engine running to check how/whether it functions OK. Any thoughts on whether the points will function if I set the gap betweent he bare bracket and 'pad' appropriately?
 
If this engine is as suggested the ubiquitous Tohatsu you'll find the manual on Lakesailors site useful http://www.lakelandimages.co.uk/Forum pics/info_engine/Tohatsu/

The ignition components do look the same as those listed on the Mercury parts websites.

The Tohatsu diagram does show 2 contacts. They are usually a pretty hard material and if you try to just use the bare metal I think it will burn very quickly. You will also find if a contact is missing that the remaining one will not close parallel with the "bracket".

It might just be possible to get it running for a short period but on the other-hand it may not be possible even set the gap correctly.

Might be worth investigating the possibility that the points are the same as used by Yamaha.
 
Thanks. I can get new points for the engine but they are relatively expensive so I would if possible like to get it running briefly just to see how it is before investing much more money in it.

You can try, but my view is that the engine is very unlikely to run. The missing contact would likely be tungsten BTW.
Two-strokes with flywheel magnetos are usually very particular about the condition and gapping of the points, the gap affecting the timing.
You could turn the engine over with the plug removed, looking for a spark, in a darkened room perhaps:) That would tell you something about the ignition, but that's all you can reasonably hope for IMHO.

Was not actually suggesting he buy the catalog, I was just looking for a picture to identify the motor. Looking at the link you posted I can say that it is definitely a Tohatsu. My 2.5 is identical except being a '95 model its got cdi. Same motor in the States is a Nissan or Mercury.
