hi not been on here in a long time, i'm wondering if anyone can help with a question.
I have a 15 hp mercury outboard 2 stroke and ive noticed some cracks in the coils. There is two seperate coils can i replace them with a single coil with two leads. I'll try add some pics thanks in advance.

Depends, the single coil two leads system works on a wasted spark system. If that wasted spark happens at the wrong time?

You dont give any details of the coil you are considering. I can only find the type of coil in your photos listed for 15hp Mercury 2 strokes.

Even if you can fit the coil type in question, can modify the wiring to suit and it works what are the advantages.?

thanks for your answers, like i said i don't know if i could I have just seen a single one with 2 leads quite cheap. I could ony find aftermarket coils and didn't want to pay a fortune. i have managed to add pics above, thanks again

Whats the part in the second picture........ are you sure it's not for 4 stroke engines?

If you do not buy an OEM part be sure to buy one of the well known reliable brands such as Sierra or CDI

Cheap junk may well be more expensive in the long run

The system with a single coil and 2 leads probably works by connecting the HT +ve to one plug electrode and HT -ve to the other plug electrode. The coil is not earthed to the engine. I've never thought about it but I'm not sure whether a twin coil system with earthed coils could easily be converted to a wasted spark system with no earthing.
